On 30 March, millions around the world will be helping the planet by participating in Earth Hour, a worldwide event involving a 60-minute power cut in households, businesses and state institutions. This powerful campaign is also being observed in Budapest, where iconic landmarks will be turning off their non-essential lights, including Buda Castle, Parliament, the National Theatre and city bridges. The decorative lights along showcase Andrássy út will also be disconnected.

What started as a symbolic Sydney-based event in 2007 has become the world’s largest grassroots movement run by global conservationists WWF. This powerful campaign takes place on the last Saturday of March every year, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm local time. From the Eiffel Tower to the Sydney Opera House and the Golden Gate Bridge, guidebook-star sights go dark around the globe to highlight the effects of climate change and promote sustainable practices.

Joining in for this lights-out attraction, several Budapest restaurants are organising romantic candlelit dinner events. Participating hangouts include riverfront cocktail bar KIOSK, party vortex wine bar Doblo, Hungarian-style Gettó Gulyás and steampunk pub Krak’n Town. See here for the full list of eateries involved.

WWF Hungary invites those who want to help the planet to join the foundation’s four-week challenge of sustainable practices that anyone can easily adapt to their own lifestyle. Participants are being encouraged to upload a photo accompanied by #foldoraja2019 on their social media channels, to show their support for environmental protection. And, of course, turn out their lights for the event.
Earth Hour unites communities around the world to act on issues related to climate change, biodiversity and nature. Connected with this event, WWF Ecuador is pushing for a law to ban the distribution of single-use plastic, including disposable bags, while WWF Kenya is aiming to engage local communities in planting one billion trees for the KeepKenyaBreathing campaign. Facing the threat of water shortages, Malaysia will focus on freshwater conservation with its Clean Water and Clean Air initiative.

Whether you are in Budapest for this year’s Earth Hour or thousands of miles away, by simply keeping your non-essential lights off for just 60 minutes, you’ve already taken a green step towards preserving the planet.
