4pm-8pm:Ice skating at the Mayor’s Office From today, a free skating rink is being set up right in the heart of Budapest, around the courtyard of the city mayor’s office. The facility will be open for two sessions a day until 5 January, apart from 24 and 31 December, and 1 January. The rink will then be open until 8pm, and from 10am-2pm and 3pm-8pm every day, apart from the afternoons of 24 and 31 December, and the morning of New Year’s Day. Up to 150 skaters can use the facility at any one time, and other children’s attractions and surprises will be laid on.
6pm-8pm:Hommage à 1969 at the Vasarely Museum At this special, one-night-only event at the museum dedicated to his work, Hungarian-French artist Victor Vasarely is celebrated on the anniversary of his first and only show under the Hungary’s Socialist censors 50 years ago, in 1969. By then, this pioneer of the Op-Art movement had long garnered global fame in his adopted country of France. Any excuse, in fact, is a good one to trek up to this fascinating gallery by the pretty main square of Óbuda.
6pm-8pm: White Christmas at the Bem cinema Bing and the incomparable Danny Kaye don Santa outfits and paint the silver screen white for Christmas. Set during the last Christmas of World War II, which would have rung true with audiences only ten years later. Irascible Hungarian Michael Curtiz directs, one of his last blockbusters. Screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
8pm-11.30pm: Lépjünk a holdra, Fák Alatt Zenekar at the Dürer Kert Hungarian alt-rock, which means it’s warm and fuzzy rather than in-yer-face. It also means a violin chucked in for good measure where FAZ are concerned, and an anti-pop attitude for festival veterans Lépjünk a holdra.

9am-6pm:Artmessenger Contemporary Christmas Art Fair at the KUBIK Coworking space
Today is your last chance to visit the Contemporary Christmas Art Fair, taking place at KUBIK Coworking’s gallery at Jászai Mari tér by Margaret Bridge. Filled with the works of acclaimed contemporary artists, the collection allows you to arrange something unique and exclusive for your loved ones under the tree. Around 200 pieces have been created by more than 100 young artists, both established and up-and-coming.
7pm-9pm:Judy at the Toldi cinema Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones’s Diary, Cold Mountain) pulls out all the stops to embody Judy Garland in the sad last year of her life, giving sell-out shows at one of London’s most prestigious concert halls before descending into a hell of debt, drink and drugs. This preview showing is screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
8pm-11pm: Nana Vortex, Ötödik Évszak at the Fonó Club Composed and recorded on a wine terrace on the north shore of Lake Balaton, the music created by Nana Vortex is an experimental mix of pop, jazz and Hungarian folk, the Fonó deep in south Buda being the epicentre of the city’s ethno-music scene. For this particular show, the band also celebrates the poetry of János Arany, born 200 years ago. Support is provided by the violin-toting Ötödik Évszak, the ‘Fifth Season’, also fronted by a songstress with a distinctive voice.
11.30pm-6am:Cosmic Hug presents Astral Projection, Wegha & Tsubi at the A38 Ship Party with psychedelic trance and Goa trance from Israel thanks to prominent electro group Astral Projection, currently comprising Avi Nissim and Lior Perlmutter. Hungarian DJ Wegha and Tsubi provide support.
Saturday
Noon-3pm: MFÖEK Christmas Mini Market at BB’z Bar & Grill
Christmas is a time to think about our four-legged friends as well – Hungarian non-profit organisation MFÖEK helps find rescued dogs loving homes. On 21 December, the team hosts a Christmas market at BB’z Bar& Grill, with useful items for dog and cat owners, as well as recently rescued creatures.
Noon-7pm: Markett design fairat the Big Lumen
Featuring artisanal jewellery by Kinga Horanyi, cool bags by Müskinn and screen-printed clothes by Verkstaden, the Markettdesign fair returns to the BigLumen café for the last time this year. There is an extended list of exhibitors compared to 2018 – look out, too, for the riso prints and notebooks by BPZines and woollen pullovers and accessories by Éviköt.
4.30pm-5.30pm:Christmas concert by Song Factory Budapest
A group of young Budapest singers provide choral Yuletide cheer with Christmas songs in English, revered pop hits and solo performances led by conductor Benedek Hetei-Bakó. All takes place at the Wesselényi17 Community Centre in the heart of the Jewish Quarter. Admission is free.
11.30pm-6am:Xmas séance with Pablo Bolívar at the A38 Ship Santander-born sound engineer Pablo Bolívar moved into DJing in the early 2000s, releasing a number of acclaimed records on Barcelona label Regular and giving mesmerising shows around the world. On Saturday he returns to the A38 for one last big party before Christmas.

10am-6pm:WAMP Christmas Market at Millenáris Park Under reassuring heading ‘Don’t Panic!’, the third of three pre-Christmas markets organised by WAMP takes place at the Millenáris Park. A collective of Hungary’s finest designers, WAMP stage regular events in Budapest – this one involves 200 creatives, who fill the hall with handmade and original products, everything from clothes to toys and unique art prints. Festive treats, workshops and a children’s play corneralso await. Admission is 500 forints, refunded in a form of a voucher to be used around the market.
10am-8pm:Óbuda Design Picnic at Esernyős This is the last day of the Óbuda Design Picnic, set up at the focal cultural and information centre of Esernyős on the main square of this quaint neighbourhood north of Buda. Christmas-themed artworks should provide plenty of inspiration for presents, while giving shoppers the opportunity to meet the creators of the artefacts on offer.
5pm-7.15pm: Love Actuallyat the Bem cinema Hard to believe, but it’s nearly 20 years since Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson and the late, great Alan Rickman starred in this Brit comedy, wrapping up all the Christmas clichés into 129 feel-good cinematic minutes. The office party, the number 1 hit, the Yule-inspired romance, the loneliness, the school nativity play, it’s all here, told in ten mini-stories. Through the schmaltz, look out for gruff Scottish comedian Gregor Fisher as the long-suffering manager of a has-been rock star. Screened in English with Hungarian subtitles.
5pm –:Four Dogs at the Budapest Jazz Club Stalwart of Hungary’s underground scene, artist and musician András Wahorn brings together two guitarists, two bass players, a drummer and violinist to round out his own saxophone sounds in this shape-shifting musical experience.
