Anyone having trouble finding English-language films in the city must look no further than the Közkincs Library, which screens features on a fortnightly basis.

The next screening is this Saturday, 23 November, at 7pm, and will be featuring the drama-thriller Dolores Claiborne.

The film club, whose full title is the Feminist Film Forum, was started in May by Yago Paris, a film theory student living and studying here in Budapest. “I came here to the library once,” he says, “and discovered that they have a volunteer programme. This seemed like the perfect way to mix activism and artistic passion”.

The films are chosen by Yago and a few other contributors at the library, including its founder, Antonia Burrows. “We try to focus not only on American films,” says Yago. “But they are all in English, because we want it to be accessible to English speakers.” Most are shown with Hungarian subtitles.

After each film, a discussion follows. “Sometimes it’s even the most interesting part,” says Yago. The film screenings draw up to 30 people at any one time.

This week’s film was picked by Antonia, and tells the story of Dolores (Kathy Bates), who suffered from domestic violence, and is now being accused of murder. The film was chosen because 25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Antonia was also one of the founders of NANE in 1994, a non-profit organisation which speaks out against violence towards women and children.

The event is free to attend, although a donation of 700 forints is recommended to help fund the library. Tea is also available. “And sometimes food,” adds Yago, “but definitely always tea”.

For more information on this weekend’s screening, and those in the future, check the library’s Facebook page for updates.
