It’s always a challenge to learn a new language, but a meet-up group here in Budapest provides a unique 90-minute course for anyone looking to improve their English in a stress-free environment.

Long-time English language teacher Alex Macintosh found that learners were struggling to master what he terms the sing-song parts of English: intonation, two-word verbs, idioms and slang. In response, he crafted the so-called Pronunciation Adventure Park, a meet-up group devoted to tackling these difficult details of English in a fun setting.

The concept of the Pronunciation Adventure Park is easy: participants visit different ‘attractions’ or stations, and use what they learn in an interactive way. After 15 minutes, everyone rotates and focuses on a new subject, with speaking practice and feedback along the way.

Stations include Intonation Rollercoaster, Idiom Depot, Collocation Mountain and Slang Terminal.

The content changes each week, and material is always uploaded to the internet so that practice can be done at home. Alex describes the event as: “a high-participation 90 minutes, designed for everyone to learn something new and have fun practising English”.

There is a challenge at the end to go through what you’ve learned, and the winner gets free admittance to the next week’s class.

The meet-up is conducted entirely in English, and takes place on Wednesdays between 6-7.30pm at the office of the D18 Café.

The cost is 3,000 forints at the door. Anyone interested should find more information on the meet-up event page.
