A short, pleasant stroll from the Hűvösvölgy terminal for trams 56 and 61, close to the hiking trails that wind their way up from here, Adyliget park was laid out in the 1920s amid pleasant family residencies. It was first named after István Tisza, the conservative Hungarian prime minister assassinated in the immediate aftermath of World War I.
After World War II, as the political winds changed, it became Adyliget in honour of revered poet Endre Ady, who used to enjoy lunch and wine at the nearby Balázs Restaurant in Hűvösvölgy.
Renovation here began in 2018 and cost around 400 million forints (€1.2 million). The park comprises a wider, quieter area, with paths and benches, as well as an ornithological trail created for children. For more patient younger ones, a miniature observation post has been built, and signboards along the trail advise on what to look out for: not only birds, but frogs, hedgehogs and bees.
Across the park, a large enclosed playground caters to all ages, so parents can let the little ones run around in safety. Features include slides and all kinds of castles, trampolines and water games. With few trees, thought has been given to the provision of shade, granted by huge sails draped above. There’s a 24-hour pay-for toilet and numerous drinking taps.
Opposite the playground, sports courts include a five-a-side football pitch, basketball and streetball, ping pong tables and plenty of exercise machines.
