"This building complex will be a modern, 21st-century centre for physical and mental healing," says the team at ZDA-Zoboki Design & Architecture, the winner of the tender to create the plans for the new hospital.
The health complex will replace the current Szent István Hospital, centralising several institutes to create a cutting-edge facility with 24-hour services. The centre will encompass special departments such as transplants, burn reconstruction and a heart institute for children. More than 40 operating rooms and da Vinci surgical robots will assist the work of medical staff.
As this will be the first such modern hospital in Hungary, the architects looked to examples already in use in countries such as Austria, America, the Netherlands and Denmark. The institute will also function as an educational and research centre.
One main building and six wings will make up the complex. To ease the admission of patients, there will only be one main entrance from Nagyvárad tér. This will incorporate the original heritage structure currently standing here, designed by the great Hungarian architect of New York Café fame, Alajos Hauszmann.
