After a recent makeover, new shops and streamlined gastronomy outlets now welcome passengers at Budapest Airport, an increasingly important travel hub for Central Europe. Shopping in the departure zone of Terminal 2 is even more pleasant with a wider range of Hungarian and international merchandise offered to customers. The modernisation comes in the wake of record-breaking traffic at the airport, registering more than 13 million passengers in 2017. Recently, it also received accreditation for being carbon-neutral, becoming the first airport in the region to be granted such an award.

A range of enhanced shopping features welcome passengers setting off from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. After a recent makeover, the Terminal 2 departure zone now presents an extended outlet area for Hungarian souvenirs and refashioned stores for international clothing and accessory brands.

During the opening ceremony to celebrate the revamped shopping area, Chief Executive Officer and Director at Budapest Airport Jost Lammers welcomed these innovations providing a more prominent place to businesses around the terminals.

“We are delighted to see that besides passenger numbers, commercial traffic at the airport has also been showing a growing trend,” said Lammers. “The increasing interest towards our deluxe outlets shows that the travel experience starts at the airport – according to our passengers, as well,” he added.

Found in the SkyCourt departure area, recently opened Memories of Hungary is now even bigger and better, offering a vast range of local souvenirs from Hungarian wine to delicate porcelain across an expanded floor space. As a recent addition to the existing shops at SkyCourt, Polish cosmetics company Inglot unveiled a new outlet, its second Budapest store.

On the same floor level, Costa Coffee now features more seating and additional charging stations for electronic devices. Other remodelled outlets at the airport include Israeli accessory label Michal Negrin and the global Virgin brand, both found at Terminal 2A.

“These new features not only embellish their current environment, but they suit the extra capacity of the airport well,” Lammers outlined.

Boosting Budapest Airport’s viability as a major air-traffic hub, a new passenger pier of over 10,000 square metres is currently under construction that will serve flights originating from and heading to destinations outside of Europe’s Schengen Zone. This new facility is expected to be completed later this year. After thorough testing this month, a new system should also soon upgrade runway technology.

Just before the main summer season started, Budapest Airport registered 1.3 million passengers in May, a 14% increase compared to the same month in 2017. For the calendar year of 2018, passenger numbers are expected to exceed the 14 million threshold. Airport officials credit this increase to the addition of regular flights and frequency increases, among other factors including Budapest’s rising popularity as a travel and business destination.

Thanks to this growing demand, the airport’s first on-site hotel ibis Styles Budapest Airport by the Paris-based AccorHotels Group was launched here in January.

Meanwhile, Budapest Airport also received an international award. Airports Council International (ACI) confirmed that the Budapest transport hub achieved carbon-neutral accreditation, a major environmental award for maintaining the balance of energy consumption and energy production.

According to a press release by Budapest Airport, across Europe, around 30 airports have gained such an award. By applying sustainable solutions, including LED lighting, upgraded heating system and water supply, over the last five years Budapest Airport has considerably reduced its CO2 emissions generated during its daily operation.

Considering the energy used for making hot water and for heating and lighting, the consumption of the airport is equivalent with the energy usage of 23,000 households. This is why adopting planet-friendly solutions is a top priority in the airport’s long-term agenda.
