In our weekly series “The Saturday Gig”, we highlight one special performance happening on Saturday night in Budapest – if you have no plans, you do now!

Balázs Elemér Group concert at Budapest Jazz Club – January 13th, 7pm

THE BAND: This weekend, the Budapest Jazz Club is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a two-day blowout bash – and one of Hungary’s top jazz ensembles, the Balázs Elemér Group, is the headline act for the party’s final night. Since founding his namesake outfit in 2000, internationally renowned Magyar drummer Balázs Elemér leads his troupe of talented musicians through dreamy soundscapes of soul-stirring songs that bridge smooth vocal harmonies, impassioned piano and guitar solos, and staccato blasts of percussions provided by the bandleader. Some of the most popular tunes by the Balázs Elemér Group (aka B.E.G.) include creatively modernized versions of Hungarian folk songs.

THE VENUE: Since taking over the premises of an old cinema near Jászai Mari Square about a decade ago, the Budapest Jazz Club reigns as the most popular performance hall for diverse jazz performances in the Magyar metropolis. The lobby is now converted into a dimly lit cabaret-style lounge, while two main performance halls host globally revered jazz greats and up-and-coming local musicians. This is one of few Budapest clubs where guests can enjoy full meals while watching a show, and free late-night jam sessions are held here every Friday and Saturday night.

THE SHOW: The Budapest Jazz Club’s 10th-anniversary party started on Friday night and continues through Sunday’s sunrise – tonight’s performances begin with the Oláh Kálmán Jr. Quartet and SoLaTi before B.E.G. takes the stage, and all guests will be provided with birthday cake; sweetening the offer even more, entry is free all night long. Check out the Budapest Jazz Club website for more details.
