The year has hardly started and already there’s a huge urban project being outlined alongside one of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. Nyugati Railway Station, built in 1877 by the Eiffel company of Tower fame, a masterpiece of iron and glass, has long been surrounded by contemporary commercial outlets. Now, nearly 20 years after building the WestEnd City Center behind the station, Budapest-based Gránit Pólus has announced the creation of a new mixed-use development, across a site some three to four times bigger than the one occupied by the neighboring mall. It is due to break ground in the last quarter of 2018.

The largest upcoming private development in the region will be taking place on a 320 to 450-square-meter plot next to the WestEnd City Center and Nyugati Railway Station, transforming it into a multipurpose resource of offices, shops and parkland. The real estate developer in question is the Gránit Pólus Group, also responsible for the WestEnd City Center itself. Despite its prominent location, the area adjoining the mall is an eyesore, one that has been unexploited for decades. This is where the new urban development will take shape.

Nothing is yet known about the specific appearance of the new project as the developers are intending to use different architectural offices to design their buildings, thus creating natural diversity. Everyone will be encouraged to follow a sustainable and environmentally responsible approach. Gránit Pólus was also involved in the development of the Palace of Arts and the Papp László Budapest SportArena, major Budapest landmarks built in and for the 21st century.

This new zone by Nyugati will comprise residential buildings, offices, a hotel, as well as service and commercial units, plus a park of nearly two hectares. The developers are not only keen for this to be Budapest’s most attractive residential and working center, but also a popular tourist attraction. The foundation stone is planned to be laid as early as the last quarter of 2018, after which construction work can begin.
