Soaring above Buda’s medieval surroundings, Fishermen’s Bastion is one of the most visited landmarks in the Hungarian capital. It was built just over a century ago by local architect Frigyes Schulek as a reminder of the historic former castle wall. Viewed from afar, the most distinguishing feature of this neo-Romanesque style structure is its cone-topped turrets that represent the seven Magyar chieftains who settled here to found the present-day nation in 895.
Listed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site together with its surrounding scenery, the banks of the Danube and the Buda Castle Quarter, this statuesque monument is the star in the latest video feature by New-York based Great Big Story, one in a series created around Budapest and the countryside. Collaborating with the Hungarian Tourism Agency, this global media company has produced similarly enticing movies featuring splendid attractions such as the Great Market Hall and the Molnár János Cave, a secret underwater cavern in the capital. Using numerous long-range and close-up shots of Fishermen’s Bastion, this new video walks viewers through the history of this stone-carved construction, explaining the origin of its name and many other little-known tidbits.
