Art Market Budapest 2017

Buda’s Millenáris Cultural Center transforms into a maze-like viewing space for an extended weekend once again in October with a huge collection of colorful contemporary artworks filling its industrial interior. Plenty of prominent local and international galleries and artists come together to present avant-garde paintings, eccentric sculptures, and modern photos to visitors, while the artful extravaganza is also an annual crash course for those who want to immerse themselves in creative art forms. The guest of honor during this year’s Art Market is Israel and, best of all, the attractions on display are all available for purchase.

Shoe Magic. Experimental Shoes in Art and Design.

A colorful collection of fascinating footwear fills a small-sized hall of Kunsthalle. Those who enter this psychedelic exhibition space step into a surreal world where designer shoes almost come alive in the form of a golden skyscraper, a blooming flower field, an intimidating arm, or an oversized lipstick. Initiated by The Hague Virtual Shoe Museum, the project examines how 21st-century fashion footwear can reveal the personality of those who wear it, while the exhibition highlights the continually changing forms of shoe design and production.

World Press Photo 2017

As the closing exhibit at the Museum of Ethnography before it moves to a new building by 2019, this year’s World Press Photo allows visitors to combine admiring poignant pictures with one last look around the elaborate edifice on Kossuth Square. Navigating this annual event, we come across heartbreaking stories of giant pandas on the verge of extinction, refugees struggling to survive, babies born with undersized heads due to the Zika virus, and many more tear-jerking scenes. On the second floor, another set of pictures presents happier scenes.

Sebastião Salgado – Genesis

For years, restless Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado has prowled the planet’s faraway lands to capture the world as a paradise. Found within Budapest’s Kunsthalle, a multiple-hall display features his captivating pictures that portray untouched slices of the Earth, from the exotic Southern Hemisphere to snow-covered northern spaces. Curated by the photographer’s wife Lélia Wanick Salgado, the monochrome images of vanishing wildlife and secluded tribes make you feel like as if you're watching a documentary movie.

Fluxus and Friends

The current display at Budapest’s Ludwig Museum, known for itsseasonally changing exhibitions of contemporary art, embraces one of the most elemental and rebelling movements of the 20th century. Fluxus is sometimes interpreted as a continuation of Dadaism and Surrealism. Hundreds of artworks – psychedelic paintings, surreal sculptures and unorthodox installations – were selected from the collection of the Budapest-based Maria and Walter Schnepel Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organization representing renowned Hungarian and international Fluxus artists.

Péter Korniss – Continuing Memories

With his insightful documentation of the vanishing lifestyles of Hungarian and Transylvanian peasants, multiple-award-winning artist Péter Korniss is considered a master of contemporary Hungarian photography. In Building C at the Hungarian National Gallery, a current retrospective embraces peasant culture, the tribulations of itinerant workers and unusual scenes from Hungary’s traditional Nativity Plays over the course of five decades. As you navigate around the eye-opening display, this world of tradition slowly starts fading in the shadow of globalization.

Sanghay – Shanghai

Linking the bustling Oriental metropolis of Shanghai with the one-time Sanghay Bar in Budapest, the current exhibition at the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts encapsulates the parallel diversities between East and West, while providing glimpses into the world of Hungarian communities working in Shanghai between the wars. Numerous photographs and relics used by Magyars when they were living in the Chinese metropolis have been collected and displayed. Looking at the archive pictures, we see Western people posing in front of Eastern backgrounds and Chinese ladies in fashionable Western attire – but we can also learn how Oriental influences affected Hungarian art.
