A Level 3 heat alert comes into effect on 27 June, and to help residents and visitors stay hydrated, Budapest Waterworks has installed temporary water refill stations at several busy locations across the city, making fresh drinking water available where it wasn't before.

Temperatures could reach 40°C over the weekend of 27 June, with densely built-up parts of the city feeling even hotter due to the lack of green spaces. In response to what is expected to be the most intense heatwave of the summer so far, Budapest Waterworks has installed more than 15 temporary water refill stations across the city, complementing the existing permanent drinking fountains and making it easier to stay hydrated.

New temporary water refill stations, marked with the international drinking water symbol, have been installed at the following locations:

  • City Hall Park (District V)
  • Keleti Railway Station (District VIII, Baross Square 1)
  • Örs vezér Square 2 (District XIV)
  • Széll Kálmán Square (District II)
  • Heltai Jenő Square (District III)
  • Deák Ferenc Square (District V)
  • Astoria (District V, Károly Boulevard 4)
  • Ferenciek Square 2 (District V)
  • Kelenföld Railway Station (District XI, Kelenföldi Road)
  • Kálvin Square 10 (District IX)
  • Móricz Zsigmond Square 2 (District XI)
  • Október Huszonharmadika Street 2–6 (District XI, Újbuda Centre)
  • Gazdagréti Square 8 (District XI)
  • Szépvölgyi Road 8 (District III, Kolosy Square)
  • Kossuth Lajos Square (District V, Parliament Visitor Centre)
  • Ludovika Square, National University of Public Service (District VIII)

IT IS IMPortant to leave home with a bottle of water or a reusable water bottle already filled.

You can then refill it throughout the day at the temporary water stations listed above or at Budapest's permanent drinking water fountains. The locations of the permanent refill points can be found on the kozkutak.hu website and in the BudapestGO app.

The city's streets are being cooled down

According to the Mayor's Office, all relevant divisions of Budapest Public Utilities are stepping up their heatwave response. Street-cleaning vehicles operated by FKF will spray water to cool roads and public spaces, FŐKERT is expanding its watering and shading programmes to protect the city's green areas, while FŐTÁV has prepared its district cooling systems to cope with increased demand during the hottest days of the summer.

According to the city, Budapest Public Utilities (BKM) will use around 20 water-spraying vehicles to cool streets and public spaces.

spraying the roads with water can temporarily lower the temperature of the asphalt by 6 to 8 degrees.

°C

According to the Budapest Transport Centre (BKK), its spacious, air-conditioned customer centres will once again be open to everyone during the heatwave - not only for administrative matters, but also for anyone looking to cool down or take a break from the high temperatures. Visitors can also access free drinking water at all BKK customer centres.
