A double swing for kids and parents to ride together, a seesaw for disabled children, a bathroom with changing tables – Budapest’s newest playground, located in downtown District VI near City Park, combines timeless imagination with 21st-century features for safety and convenience. We explored the premises with a two-year-old girl.

This playground is so hidden that we barely found it – only by following a little boy cruising around on his toy motorbike did we find our way into Benczúr köz, perpendicular to Benczúr Street in District VI near City Park.

A playground has been here for a very long time, but after a complete reconstruction of this recreation zone in recent months, the new playground has much more diversity: after hearing that it’s been designed by Boldizsár Kő – one of the top Hungarian playground designers – parents and their children rushed here. We explored and tested the playground with two-year-old Flóra and her mother, although we had to be careful not to lose each other in the crowd. If there are only a few people, she gets bored of the toys easily; she walks around once and wants to go home right afterwards. Here she enjoys the buzz around her. At least she gets tired by the end of the day,” Flóra’s mother says.

There is certainly a lot of playground equipment that we can’t find at many other places, including the double swing that child and parents can use at the same time, or the accessible seesaw, which allows children in wheelchairs to play side-by-side with able-bodied children.

More than two children can fit on another seesaw that looks like a colorful boat, as well as on the larger jungle gym, decorated with lions and unicorns – although this latter is more suitable for older children. Apart from the jungle gym, none of the playground equipment is dangerous, so it’s no surprise that the playground was full of children under the age of four.

There’s also a soccer field and a large slide that children can climb up to on cute acorns and hedgehogs, as well. Around the giant plane tree stretches a colorful miniature town, around which the children love to run – we got a little dizzy trying to keep up with Flóra. Still, the greatest attraction of the playground is a large fish with water flowing out of its mouth, through a multi-stage well.

At most playgrounds, parents must change their children’s diapers on benches and other less-than-clean horizontal surfaces, so the most thoughtful facility here must be the proper bathroom with disabled access and a changing table. This fairy-tale empire of Boldizsár Kő is ready for the 21st century, and once the hype loses its momentum, the playground will hopefully become less crowded and thus even more enjoyable.
