Spring is in full swing in Hungary’s capital, and anyone who wants to immerse in the fragrant scene can enjoy an especially aromatic picnic event this weekend – beginning on Saturday, the annual Sakura Celebration at the city’s sprawling ELTE Botanical Garden attracts crowds of visitors to admire the Japanese cherry trees while they bloom. Found in Budapest’s District VIII, one of the city’s most prominent plant preserves is already boasting pink-hued scenery, while on April 8-9 and on April 15-16, the alfresco extravaganza is complete with various Oriental-style workshops and attractions.

Considered as one of the park’s crowd-pulling attractions, every spring visitors gather on the grass with blankets to celebrate the traditional Japanese custom when the flowering cherry trees create colorful scenery within the vast parkland. On the occasion of the Sakura Celebration, urban dwellers can join various Asian-inspired activities through two consecutive weekends, including Japanese gastronomy workshops, concerts, and even dynamic demonstrations of Japanese martial arts. The Sakura Celebration is the only time during the year when a picnic is allowed in the garden, and those who want to indulge in more sedate moments are recommended to visit the park on weekdays between April 10th and 14th. Entrance to the park costs 950 forints, while joining some of the activities organized within the park during the event can cost extra.
