Whitewashed walls, plenty of sockets to plug into, and pleasant tranquility all welcome visitors at Budapest’s new Bubó Café, found at the intersection of the Grand Boulevard and Pozsonyi Street at Jászai Mari Square, just steps away from Margaret Bridge. Here hearty breakfasts and other meals are offered for affordable prices – such as excellent egg-based dishes, fresh salads, thick soups, and other treats – all made without any additives and allergens. Bubó welcomes early- and late-rising food lovers alike from 7am till 9pm, with breakfast available all day long.

At the beginning of District XIII’s Pozsonyi Street, we can now start the day as early as 7am with a succulent breakfast and a cup of tasty coffee. Bubó Café’s owners – a former lawyer and an IT expert – waited six years for the perfect locale to launch their lovely eatery, where anyone can pop in, from local residents to Margaret Island joggers to mums with with baby carriages to freelancers with laptops.

In the past, a chocolate shop stood in the place of Bubó, so the neighborhood has long been ready for a new café offering healthy, hearty, tasty, but simple dishes. The new owners painted all the walls plain white, and deliberately made the design minimalistic to place the focus on the guests and the food, rather than anything else. Their generous breakfast offers – which cost between 990-1,690 forints – can be ordered all day until 9pm, and include egg-based dishes enhanced with various toppings, French and continental breakfast meals, yogurt with oatmeal and fruits, and simple sausage dishes, and all of the above come with an energizing coffee concoction, or another hot drink of your choice. We tried their flavorful Croque Bubó at 10am, made with fried eggs with cheese and bacon wrapped in wholemeal toast (1,390 HUF), and it made us forget about lunch until 2pm. The omelette with smoked salmon also proved to be a perfect breakfast choice, which we washed down with a strawberry-kiwi smoothie, followed by the delicious coffee of Papa Dante, imported straight from Italy.

Furthermore, we find several other diverse dishes on the menu at Bubó, such as a wide range of dips stretching from flummery through hummus to feta cream cheese with chives, served alongside international snacks like quesadillas (1,290-1,590 HUF), hot dog plates combined with fresh vegetables (1,190 HUF), chili con carne with sour cream and toast (1,290 HUF), several kinds of salads, bagels, and simple sandwiches that cost between 590 and 890 forints. We can order everything in gluten-free versions as well, and guests who follow a vegetarian lifestyle or have lactose intolerance can also find something to their liking here.

The pastries come from Aranycipó bakery in Pécs. All dishes are served with wholemeal pastries, but of course, we can always ask for regular white bread instead. Both meaty and vegetarian soups are served all day, which, combined with a course from the menu, makes up a complete lunch meal. Upon our visit, the daily special was minestrone soup, and the dessert was tapioca and chai pudding made with rice milk. During weekends they normally offer hearty main courses as well; visitors in the past could already taste their gluten-free spinach gnocchi, and the truly traditional rakottkrumpli (a layered Hungarian dish made of potatoes, sour cream, and sausage).

The drink assortment is not as wide as the food selection, but besides beer and wine we can also order turmixes (790 HUF), lemonades, apple fröccs, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a mango lassi. Bubó is a perfect place for a second or third date, a brunch with family or friends, and even for diving into work or studying on our laptops. This hangout is also dog-friendly, so much so that they plan to include a dog menu in their repertoire in the near future.

When the terrace opens in the spring, Bubó will also operate with longer opening hours.
