Only two weeks after the launch of Budapest’s Advent and Christmas Fair at Vörösmarty Square, another mesmerizing Christmas market opened at Szent István Square outside of St. Stephen’s Basilica, awaiting visitors with spectacular light-paintings, intriguing Hungarian handicrafts, plenty of high-spirited programs, a free ice-skating rink, and a wide selection of handheld street-food treats that tantalize taste buds amid a merry ambience.

Visitors to Advent Feast at the Basilica can browse around several wooden stalls standing side by side, showcasing the special handiworks of nearly 80 talented Hungarian craftsmen, including ceramists, leather and textile producers, goldsmiths, fashion designers, and graphic artists, all proffering their unique goods through January 2nd.

Similarly to previous years, a monumental light painting holds a spectacular visual experience every night, as guests can watch a 3D mini-movie every half hour projected on the Basilica’s façade. Furthermore, plenty of other exciting programs entertain visitors, such as arts-and-crafts activities, flash mobs, folk-dance crash courses, cultural performances, spirited concerts inside the Basilica, as well as several surprise events.

At this eco-conscious Christmas Fair, more than a million energy-efficient LED bulbs line the delightful strings of illuminating decorations, and the 200-square-meter free ice-skating rink – which is made with a special kind of plastic – does not use up energy for cooling the ice either.

Considering the street-food selection, several stalls offer many of the most beloved handheld treats, such as multi-flavored chimney cakes, gingerbread cookies, savoury sausages, hot dogs, and sweets. In addition, meat lovers can devour Omaha brisket and burgers, but Italian pasta dishes and Thai soups also tantalize taste buds at this lovely market. Furthermore, 90% of the stands offer lactose- and gluten-free meals as well.

This year, an internationally recognized charitable organization, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, launches a nationwide fundraising campaign, “Szeretet Éhség” (meaning “Hunger for Love”), helping to support people living in severe conditions, which visitors can contribute to with both cash and credit cards at all stands. This fascinating Christmas Fair is free to visit between November 25-January 2nd.

Opening hours: Monday-Thursday: 11:30am-8pm, Friday: 11:30am-10pm, Saturday: 10am-10pm, Sunday: 10am-8pm
