Found 16 meters below the Danube, a utility tunnel stretches over half a kilometer long to connect the Hungarian towns of Visegrád and Nagymaros, located on opposite banks a short journey upriver from Budapest. The tunnel starts from an artificial bay, and shelters water pipes, optic cables, and electronic wires; furthermore, this passage also connects to a reservoir below the riverbed, which could pump more than 3,000 cubic meters of drinking water into Budapest in emergencies. Intrepid We Love Budapest photographer László Balkányi recently had the opportunity to traverse this hidden tunnel.
