Uber offered a beloved transportation alternative to traditional taxis in Budapest, operating with an application that allowed smartphone users to submit travel requests, which were then routed to registered Uber drivers, who used their own vehicles to provide transportation for friendly fares. This service is now suspended in Hungary due to government regulations, but a new multinational startup company, Taxify, is launching service in Budapest, contributing to the rise of ride-sharing services here.

With Uber no longer operating in Hungary, there will most likely remain a gap in the life of Budapest’s residents, as a traceable, mobile-based alternative for transportation will no longer be available. This is the issue that Taxify aims to address by expanding to Hungary. The company launched three years ago in Estonia, and fulfilled more than three million ride requests last year. After expanding to many European cities like Prague, Amsterdam, and Helsinki, the company is now on its way to Budapest, aiming to fill the gap left by the departure of Uber, which we loved for its developed technology and friendliness.

The business model of Taxify conforms to all of the Hungarian rules and regulations issued last year, and their mobile app is downloadable on Android and iOS systems. The arrival of the new multinational company is good news for both passengers and former Uber drivers who hold a taxi license. The application is similar to that of Uber, so it will be easy to get used to. Customers who avail themselves to a higher, fixed tariff will have the opportunity to pay in cash, and after Taxify rides, an e-invoice that shows a copy of the taxi meter is downloadable from an automatically sent e-mail, similarly to all other official taxi companies, Taxify’s drivers will also operate an approved taxi meter. Besides this double control – meaning that both the passenger and the company can compare the route plans of the GPS with the number of kilometers measured by the meter – the movement of the vehicle will also be traceable.

Taxify considers itself as more a tech startup than a taxi company, and aims to attract customers who got fond of Uber. Taxify sets rules of behavior for their drivers, with strict protocols for how to greet passengers. Customer feedback plays an immensely important role in the life of the company, and about half of the passengers often take the opportunity to rate their drivers. We look forward to giving this business a try soon!
