Our weekly roundup for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do, and who must not be missed during the next four days – as Monday counts as part of this weekend, because March 15th is a national holiday. Soon we will post an article with events for Tuesday, but meanwhile, we added an extra day of outstanding Budapest-based happenings – here is our pick of the bunch for the imminent 96 hours or so: an extra-long weekend with extra-good programs; what more can you ask for?

Friday

1pm - 6pm: “POP Life” – The exhibition of Tamás Lékó and Csaba Dobos at Csili Művelődési Központ
Peek into the vital Hungarian music scene through the lens of Tamás Lékó and Csaba Dobos until April 4th! Csaba Dobos is a music journalist and an expert in local hip-hop culture. He’s been collecting his close-up backstage photos since 2011 for this exhibition. Tamás Lékó has been a portrait photographer since 1998. He shot pictures for some of the most well-known Magyar music and pop-culture magazines like Wan2 or Recorder. At this exhibition, visitors can view his photos taken between 2011 and 2015.
2pm - 6pm: Csaba Kis Róka – “Expanding Decadence” exhibition at ACB Attachment With an oeuvre of works often blending the surreal and the grotesque, Csaba Kis Róka presents his latest paintings at ACB Attachment. The decadence referred in the title of the exhibition embraces both the themes of the paintings and the alteration which occurred in the artist’s style during recent years. Kis Róka has gradually left behind the traditions of realist painting: the influence of organic abstraction, initially identifiable in details only, now shows in the whole painting. Instead of the figurative content. The exhibit can be visited until April 21st.

8.30pm: Friday Night Cult Movies – Babylon at Bem CinemaSuperficially, Babylon is the story of a South London reggae sound system and its battle for survival and success. It gives brutal insight into south London’s West Indian community in the late ’70s. But its themes extend and embrace wider and deeper – as might be expected of Franco Rosso, a director renowned for an unflinching attitude toward questions of racial culture and racial ignorance. Rhythms swarm and pound through the whole film, as cultures clash, civilians fight and musicians jam – the director just gets the atmosphere. Original audio, English subtitles.
10pm - 4am: Rock The Friday – DJ Mosaken at BRKLYNWith his incredible style, Austria’s DJ Mosaken definitely knows how to keep any crowd rocking. His passion for mixing music made his dream of playing in the biggest clubs around the world a reality. His mix tapes are well known and widespread all around the globe, not only because of his unique style of mixing, but also because of his ability to combine his mixing skills with exclusives and special freestyles. Mosaken’s music repertoire contains not only hip-hop and r’n’b, but also soul, funk, and throwback classics.
11pm - 5.55am: Ninjablade Presents Krafty Kuts, E-Z Rollers at Akvárium Klub Once again, Ninjabreakz and Bladerunnaz joins forces to bring you Ninjablade, a party where old-school drum ’n’ bass meets breakbeat. Krafty Kuts will be responsible for the latter, who is known for his multi-genre sets, dexterity on the decks, and dedication to dance-floor hedonism – this time, he’ll play a special “history of breakbeat” set. His partners in crime will be E-Z Rollers, one of the biggest names in the drum ’n’ bass scene with hits like “Walk This Land” and “Though On The Top” under their belt. They’ll also play a special “classic” set.

Saturday

1pm - 7pm: Szimpla’s Monthly Bike Market at Szimpla Kert
Awaken your bicycle from its winter sleep, or if you’ve braved the cold days on two wheels, just ride here! Used and renovated bikes will go on sale, as well as special accessories and other useful items. A special Goldsprints championship will also take place, so if you think that nobody pedals faster than you, come and prove it. For those who have any problems with their bikes, from 3pm the Fogaskerékpár staff will fix it if they can – for free!
4pm - 5.30pm: MUS-E – Creative Artistic Activity at MüPa – Palace Of ArtsThe MUS-E (Musique-Europe) program was launched in 1993 under the aegis of the European Union as the brainchild of the famous violinist and humanist thinker Yehudi Menuhin. The purpose of the educational initiative, through the medium of the arts, is to provide children with the kinds of impulses that make them more open to absorbing, interpreting and reinterpreting the many diverse elements of the outside world.
7.30 pm: Brian May & Kerry Ellis – One Voice Tour at Budapesti Kongresszusi KözpontBrian May, the guitarist of the legendary band Queen, always says that he likes returning to Budapest as a musician and just for sightseeing as well. So it isn’t a surprise that his current tour with one of the great new stars of London’s West End and Broadway, Kerry Ellis, stops in Budapest for two shows (March 11-12). As a pair, they have built up a large following for their live performances and recordings, including the Kerry Ellis debut album “Anthems”, and their “Acoustic by Candlelight” live album and DVD. Expect a breathtaking and intimate show, where the two musicians will cover their favorite songs.
8pm: Magrudergrind, Primitive Man, Another Way, Ghostchant at Dürer Kert Two of the heaviest bands fromRelapse Records will share the stage with two of the heaviest Hungarian bands on this night! One of extreme music’s most distinctive modern acts, Magrudergrind, returned with their first album in six years only a few days ago. “II” is a punishing mix of grindcore, powerviolence, and hardcore punk, produced by Kurt Balou of Converge and Mutoid Man. Denver’s hatefilled blackened doom trio, Primitive Man, will help them to crush the audience with their songs of utter feedback fueled by nihilistic pain. The lineup also includes two Hungarian bands: Ghostchant and Another Way.
11pm - 6am: Frank & Tony at LÄRMFrank & Tony are a love affair in house music. Individually, Francis Harris and Anthony Collins – the guys behind moody indie-house label Scissor & Thread – already have an impressive body of work behind them. As a team, they seem to enhance each other’s strengths. They have been collaborating over the last few years to produce unique electronic music. Together the pair has released many well-received EPs of melodic house tunes in the “Frank & Tony presents…” series, which has featured the vocal talents of S&T staples black light smoke, Gry, Corbu, newcomer Julia, and current sensation Bob Moses. In New York, their hometown, they are the residents at Output, where they play once a month all night for nearly 10 hours.
Sunday

6am - 2pm: Contra Mundum Presents Afterhours at Corvin Bar Budapest never sleeps – not even after a Saturday night spent dancing and drinking. That’s why Afterhours came to life: a party series that takes place every Sunday beginning at 6am at Corvin Club, for those who still don’t want to leave the club scene, but instead spend some more time on the dance floor. This time, Zvezda BetaRoland HandrickRoocha, and David Mole will stand behind the decks. 10am - 1pm: Palace Of Delights at MüPa – Palace Of ArtsThe Palace of Delights awaits families who wish to spend their time in activecreative, and meaningful activities. The children’s concertsdance performances, and fairy-tale theater performed on stage – as well as musical and other creative activities, skills-development programs, and games taking place in other parts of the foyer – are closely linked to a weekly theme, and to concerts and other performances elsewhere on the Palace of Arts program.
5pm - 11pm: Lay-Up! – Krisz Deak, Jacint, Mesterhazy at MÜSZIKosmische musik for afternoon chilling: don’t dance, but sit down on a sofa and let the music take you to a whole new galaxy. The soundtrack will be comprised of deep housepulsing dubtechnoacid, and ambient. That’s how we would summarize the Lay-Up parties, taking place on every second Sunday at MÜSZI. This time – because Monday is a free day – they might fire things up a bit with a heavier focus on dubtechno.
8pm - 10.30pm: IAMX – Metanoia Tour at A38 Ship IAMX is a full-on aural and visual attack with the dynamic and inimitable musician and songwriter Chris Corner (of Sneaker Pimps) leading the charge. 10pm - 6am: Gaiser (Live), Marc Houle (Live), Simina Grigoriu at DürlinThere’s no ego, just music, when Jon Gaiser brings his live act to the club. Those who have met Gaiser will know he appreciates a good joke, and an even better bass line. An avid producer with an arsenal of sounds at his disposal in the booth and inside the studio, it is no wonder that he has commandeered everyone’s attention – including Budapest-based partygoers, who bought all the tickets to his last Hungarian party. His partners in crime will be techno veteran Marc Houle, also a committed live performer, who released his seminal records on Richie Hawtin’s Minus label and DJ Simina Grigoriu, known for her intensely beat-driven yet melodic sets which are moving entire dance floors.
Monday

10am - 8pm: Retro Sweets and Marzipan Festival at Akvárium Klub
The Retro Sweets and Marzipan Festival
is a place where the sweets of the past and future meet. A place where adults can relive what it was like to sit outside as a child with a “kakasos nyalóka” (a rooster-shaped lollipop) in hand, and they can see what it’s like to be a kid today and eat the artisanal marzipan specialties. The organizers welcome everyone with candy tastings, programs for children (face painting, clown shows), and special concerts.
8pm: Ozric Tentacles, Project RNL, Sardinelli at Dürer KertOzric Tentacles is returning to Hungary! One of the most influential bands to emerge from the UK’s festival scene, the Ozrics layer ambient and ethereal landscapes with freeform dub trips, incredible rave grooves, and psychedelic progressive rock. It’s an open exploration of music and the soul. The band was formed more than 20 years ago, yet their signature blend of hippy aesthetics and raver electronics with spiraling guitars, textured waves of keyboards and midi samplers, and super-groovy bass and drum rhythms continues to delight fans across the world to this day.
10pm - 5am: HOMERUN 002: Abasc X Simon Iddol at FogasházYou might know Simon Iddol as one of the key players of the mashup scene, while others know him as the respected influential music blogger behind blogs like MashupTown and AudioPorn Central, and its recent format MOARRR. He is a brilliant and innovative DJ, playing sets that are both fresh and creative, filled with brilliant tracks and mixed with great skill and technology. A true joker in terms of Monday night programs!
