When we look at a map, we see the world from above; however, if we are not like Felix Baumgartner or a griffin, we would never see the world like that. The regular maps we know and use are based on logic and precision, while the maps we create in our head are more or less subjective, colored in with our memories and experiences. They are reflecting our souls, filled with our feelings that connect us to certain places. The Belső Város project is based on the idea that maps should be personalized.

The project started with Eszter Drienyovszki‘s thesis, realizing that maps are highly variable thanks to the wide range of colors and symbols available for use. In this sense, maps are part of the new generation of customized designer products.

The concept is supported by a strong infographical backbone, along with a stable technical ground, which is the result of the cooperation of Tamás Kiss and Máté Eliás Gergely.The pscychology of mapsThe Belső Város is trying to visualize the space surrounding us from a psychological and sentimental aspect. If we visit a familiar place time flies by, we feel more comfortable, and even the tiniest details remind us of previous experiences (legendary nights spent painting the town red, painful break-ups, the best exhibition you have ever seen, or a bench on the river-bank where you have solved one of life’s countless mysteries).
If we visit new places, we are excited and often a bit scared as well. Time seems to slow down and we don’t know what to expect. Belső Város focuses on the former; it collects the objective data from Google Maps and fuses it with subjective and personal memories from you and your friends to create a graphical hybrid of information. This represents Budapest in a personal way, dotting the landscape with pins of previous parties, important life events, or just grabbing a beer with friends.
This is also a great way to socialize, since we can share our stories with a broad audience. These personal, anonym anecdotes fill the unfamiliar places with life, while helping us reimagine the familiar ones as well. Consider, for example, going home knowing that someone had their first kiss just before your doorstep; or that other people also go to the same isle of privacy and peace you visit to unwind. The Belső Város is still in an early stage, but the concept is well thought-out and has tremendous potential.
