1. OFF-Biennale Budapest 2025

From 8 May to 15 June, OFF-Biennale Budapest returns for its fifth edition to celebrate contemporary art! While doing just that, it also engages with pressing issues such as the relationship between community and the individual, the social and emotional dimensions of safety, or the feelings of alienation and belonging. Expect openings, talks, exhibitions, and guided tours – the program is so rich that it's hard to choose. Most events are free, including the opening week's programs and all exhibitions (with the exception of 'these walls are not here to defend us' at Merlin). However, some side events require tickets.

Hello Margit! festival
Hello Margit! festival is a brand new artsy festival in the beloved – and not yet touristy! – Margit Quarter. And it's spoiling us with a series of events from 15-18 May: nearly 50 venues will host more than 100 programs, some of which can be attended for free. Such as Pezsgő Margit's bubbly exhibition openings (see the video above for inspiration), a community picnic, followed by a concert by the Danubia Orchestra, the quirky Random Rajzkör (Drawing Circle) at Start Galéria Budapest, or a creative workshop at the exhibition Behind the Question Mark at Képező. You can also sign up for architectural walks that open the doors to iconic buildings like the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), the Átrium Theatre, and the Meteorological Institute's main building – but make sure to register for these in advance.

Józsi Picnic
Józsi, referring to Budapest's 8th district, Józsefváros, is here to prove it's got a real knack for organising community events. On 17 May, cult-favorite pub Zsír is hosting an all-day celebration with a clear mission: to bring neighbours closer together. Expect community cooking, a local makers' market, crafts, and yes – even glitter tattoos! And of course, the music won't be missing: Móni Rostás & Gypsy Moods will fill the air with traditional Roma tunes, while Azta Zenekar, born during the Covid era, will heat up the dance floor with authentic folk music.

Hengermalom, a former roller mill in Újbuda, is reopening this month, with a new purpose! And gear up because you'll see an abandoned industrial site transform into an open, inclusive space full of exciting events. This unique spot will soon become a vibrant community hub (23 May - 12 October), with its opening weekend between 23-25 May. Expect workshops, kids' and family programs, markets, open-air cinema, music, installations, and performances. Or just come to hang out in the courtyard, now upgraded with public seating, a pop-up bar, and plenty of greenery.
