The carnival season, stretching from Epiphany to Pancake Day, is a time for bidding farewell to winter and embracing the promise of spring. With the groundhog sightings hinting at an early spring, it's the perfect time to indulge in some festive fun. Here are three fantastic spots in and around Budapest to experience the unique flavours and spirit of carnival.

Family feast in the Buda Castle – Royal Guard and Riding Hall

First, head to the Buda Castle for a family-friendly carnival celebration. The Royal Guard and Riding Hall will be transformed into a vibrant hub of activity from 12-4 pm on 15-16 and 22-23 February, and you can enter for free – reservations are required though. Children can enjoy plenty of activities, while adults can savour traditional Hungarian dishes. The event offers a special carnival menu featuring hearty pork and bean soup, delicious Mangalica sausage with pickled cabbage and dödölle (creamy and substantial potato dumplings made from potatoes, onions, flour, paprika, and sour cream). And of course, don't miss out on the quintessential carnival treat: warm doughnuts with apricot jam.

Reservations are available here.

A beefy carnival in Etyek

For a more authentic carnival experience blending premium gastronomy with lively entertainment, indulge in the Cow Slaughter Party in Etyek – a lovely wine region half an hour from Budapest. On 15 February, guests will be treated to a feast of Michelin-starred dishes, expertly paired with fine wines and champagnes in one of the town's pretty vineyards and restaurants, Rókusfalvy Etyek. Other gastro hubs like Salt Bakery and Kistücsök Restaurant will also contribute to the culinary delights, offering exclusive dishes and special flavours. The elegant wine and champagne bar will showcase a curated selection of the finest wines and champagnes, while the Rókusfalvy Winery will present its best offerings. The Buda House Clique will set the mood with their vibrant afro house music, ensuring a truly unforgettable evening.

Édes Mackó Kürtőskalács Pastry Shop

Finally, satisfy your sweet tooth at the Édes Mackó Kürtőskalács Pastry Shop within Budapest Zoo (zoo entry is not required). Every weekend, indulge in the irresistible aroma of freshly baked kürtőskalács, the iconic Hungarian chimney cake rolled in granulated sugar/cinnamon. Enjoy special treats like kürtősfánk, a Transylvanian tradition enjoyed during this time of year (a similar-shaped cake baked in oil or fat and topped with sugar or stuffed with whipped cream). Don't miss the Valentine's Day Kürtőskalács Weekend (14-16 February), the Vegan Kürtőskalács Weekend(22-23 February), and the Allergenic-Free Kürtőskalács Days (1-2 March). The classic kürtőskalács menu offers a variety of flavours, from traditional to more adventurous options like pistachio and raspberry. And for those with dietary restrictions, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available every Wednesday and Friday from 10 am.
