While many prefer to stay indoors once the cold sets in, there are places that make it worth wrapping a scarf around your neck and stepping out. These are the spots where you can savour the most delicious moments of the autumn–winter season in Budapest.
Melted cheese in all its glorious forms
There’s no better way to warm up on a chilly evening than with a creamy, aromatic cheese fondue. At Pavillon de Paris, winter in the Alps comes to life in the heart of Budapest, with bubbling melted cheese, crisp baguette, and a glass of French champagne or white wine. Fondue isn’t just a gourmet treat – it’s a shared experience, perfect for couples or friends settling in for a long, cosy night. And if you’d rather indulge at home, head to Fromage on Pozsonyi út, where you can pick up everything from aged goudas and smoky parenyica to spicy pecorino – even Napoleon’s favourite, Époisses de Bourgogne.

Warming up with a glass of wine, just as the season calls for
KÜNST bistro is a cosy little wine bar that truly comes into its own during the colder months, serving simple cold and warm bites alongside full-bodied reds and, from December, a fragrant spiced white mulled wine. Their ever-changing selection leans towards southern flavours – expect Portuguese, Spanish and South American bottles lining the shelves of this hybrid wine shop–bar. But it’s worth settling in rather than taking a bottle home: the intimate atmosphere paired with a rich cabernet makes for the perfect slow, conversation-filled evening. Wine lovers will also feel right at home at spots like Palack, Kadarka or the Italian-inspired Oinos, all offering generous selections of wines alongside other drinks.

Warming up with a cup of tea
Teahouses like Zhao Zhou, Flying Bird Tea House and 1000TEA are true islands of peace on grey winter days. Soft cushions, fruity aromas and an intimate, soothing atmosphere set the scene, with a steaming cup of matcha or herbal tea in hand – what more could you need? These spots are perfect for anyone craving a slower pace and a moment of quiet reflection amid the rush of the city.

Hot chocolate for pure happiness
If happiness had a drinkable form, it would be the hot chocolate at Galffis Chocolate. Rich and velvety, it brings back childhood memories while the high-quality cocoa and inventive flavours – from orange to salted caramel to chilli – take the experience to a new level. Settle into the gallery space and you’ll quickly forget the chill outside; paired with a riverside stroll, it’s the perfect feel-good winter ritual. At Ahoy! you can take things a step further by customising your own hot chocolate, letting your creativity run wild.

Kürtőskalács, just the way we love it
You can smell kürtőskalács long before you see it – the air fills with vanilla, caramel and cinnamon wherever it’s being baked. But if the craving hits, skip the simple street-stall versions. At Édes Mackó beside the Zoo, Vitéz Kürtős serves the treat at its very best, whether you prefer a classic coating or something a little more adventurous. Their kürtős fondue is a real speciality: freshly baked chimney cake served with a selection of sweet dips. Pichler, famous for its filled kürtőskalács creations, is another top spot for families, couples or visitors exploring the city. It’s one of wintertime Budapest’s true must-tries.

Steamed dumplings and sweet, cosy comfort
At Édesmindegy Dessert Bar, gőzgombóc is more than a sweet treat – it’s pure comfort. Soft, steamed yeast dough filled with plum jam, topped with ground poppy seeds and served in a pool of warm vanilla custard instantly transports you to an Alpine hut. They also offer playful twists like raspberry–pistachio or Nutella versions. And if Újlipótváros isn’t on your route, you can still indulge in a classic serving at Majorka in Városmajor or at their Budaörs outpost.

Cabin atmosphere in Budapest
If you’re craving an Alpine vibe without heading to the slopes, make your way to the newly opened RundO in City Park, where mulled wine, warm blankets and the surrounding nature create an unmistakable chalet feeling. Dress warmly for the terrace – the food will take care of the rest. Alongside their signature császármorzsa, you’ll find steaming chicken soup and freshly fried, crispy schnitzel waiting for anyone stopping by before, after or even during a stroll through the park. And if you’re up for a little trip beyond the city, Ürömi Hütte offers the full Austrian-inspired experience just a short ride away.

Strudel, just like grandma used to make
Finchi’s strudels are the perfect blend of old-world nostalgia and modern gastro flair. Their classics – apple, cottage cheese and sour cherry – carry the same homely warmth you’d expect at your grandma’s table, while the more adventurous can try creations like Belgian chocolate–curd, rum–plum–walnut or chestnut. A slice of strudel makes for an ideal afternoon ritual, especially with a cup of tea or a hot chocolate – they even do a marshmallow version. And don’t miss Rétesbolt Anno 1926, which will celebrate its 100th birthday next year; its long-standing popularity is thanks to its generous fillings, minimal pastry and the traditional hand-stretched technique that makes each slice special.

Autumn and winter turn Budapest into a true feast of flavours – you just need to know where to go. These spots don’t only warm you up, but also show how rich, cosy and lovable the city’s gastronomic side can be, even when the cold settles in.
