Even though a sugar-free confectionery might sound like an oxymoron, we visited places that sell desserts without added sugar. Although more and more places cut out refined sugar entirely, and a lot of spots experiment with this genre, there are obviously differences in quality. We decided to collect those sweet treats that proved to be delicious not just for those who stay away from sugar, but also for anyone with a sweet tooth.

DXN Café

DXN on the Grand Boulevard is a café, breakfast spot, and confectionery driven by health and conscious consumption. Although we don’t think they managed to really find their design, their products are convincing – whether we are talking about their coffees, sandwiches, or desserts. All of their sweets are paleo, which means they don’t contain white flour, sugar, or dairy products, so here we can eat everything without feeling guilty, or ill. Their website provides information on the ingredients of their products, but they will gladly answer any questions in the shop. Both the paleo caramel apple cake (690 forints) and the raspberry “cottage-cheese cream” are great choices.

Ehetemmm

Ehetemmm is basically a paleo-pantry and a small café on Pozsonyi Road. Those who follow a paleo diet can get all their ingredients here (like seed-based flours, sweeteners, oils, etc.), and the café also serves sugar-free desserts, cookies, and pastries. Most of these are made with erythritol or xylitol, based on Ehetemmm’s original recipes. We tried the almond croissant from their cookie selection, but the winner was the coconut ball (350 forints) – you couldn’t tell that it was “free”, and it somewhat reminded us of a classic Hungarian Sport candy bar – a similarity that suited the dessert very well.

La Mimosa

This confectionery of Újlipótváros is not only famous for its dog biscuits, but also for its summertime ice creams, the hot chocolates it serves during fall and winter, its wedding cakes, and its reform desserts. As the demand for alternative solutions kept growing, La Mimosa adapted to it, while keeping the classic desserts as well. Their sugar-free products have the same quality as their “normal” ones. As The Birthday Cake of Hungary competition also has a sugar-free category, we decided to try the winner, the Blueberry Princess Cake – it’s a light one, with a bit of a sour flavor due to the berries, which compliments the yogurt and the almond in a lovely way.

Naspolya Nassolda

Every dessert at Naspolya is raw, vegan, made without added sugar, and free of milk, gluten, soy, and eggs. This is heaven on Earth for those who have food allergies, and even those who are more conscious about their diet can eat anything without hesitation. Anything. They pay special attention to seasonal products – their base is always made of fresh fruits, vegetables, and seeds. It’s a cozy place with a tasteful hipster vibe that’s still attractive for everyone. The salted caramel cupcake and the cakes with either pumpkin or poppy seeds are all must-haves. We love that they only use natural sweeteners: a little date or raisin won’t scare away those who don’t approve of alternative sugar substitutes. Their only disadvantage is that the prices are higher.

Zabrakadabra Healthy Confectionery

Zabrakadabra on Tűzoltó Street has a huge selection of spectacular-looking confections with impressive flavors. Besides paying attention to sugar substitutes, they also make gluten-free desserts; what’s more, they create these in a kitchen that was designed especially for this purpose, so that even those who have an extreme sensitivity can safely have a bite. Their cake slices cost about the same as they would at a “normal” bakery; we can get full with these healthy treats starting from 650 forints, while staying away from the calories. Our favorite was a classic Sacher cake slice.
