Now that the warm weather is here to stay, it’s hard not to spend every possible moment outdoors. While sleeping under the stars might be a step too far, these three cycling routes offer the perfect excuse to make the most of a sunny weekend. Each feels like a proper day trip in its own right, combining exercise, fresh air and plenty of opportunities to explore along the way.

Cycling is one of the best ways to spend time outdoors. Beyond being a practical means of getting around the city, a bike can also transform a weekend outing into an adventure of its own. Instead of heading for a hike or wandering through the forest, you can spend the day exploring on two wheels and cover far more ground along the way. Seasoned cyclists might think nothing of riding from Budapest to Göd and back, but not everyone is looking for that kind of challenge. With that in mind, we've rounded up three cycling routes that offer a full day of discovery without leaving you completely exhausted by the end.

A scenic cycling trip to Kavicsos Lake

Head towards Csepel, which is now easier to reach than ever thanks to the network of dedicated cycle paths and the recent opening of the area around the National Athletics Centre. This route also avoids some of the busier sections around Közvágóhíd, Budapest Park and the Ráckeve HÉV terminus, making for a more pleasant ride. Once in Csepel, the cycle path branches off in several directions, but the route is well signposted. Follow the signs towards Szigetszentmiklós, as Kavicsos Lake is located on the border between the Budapest district and Szigetszentmiklós, alongside several other lakes popular with anglers.

The route takes you across Csepel, and shortly after leaving both the district and Budapest itself, signposts indicate where to turn off the cycle path towards Kavicsos Lake. What makes the lake particularly distinctive are the narrow peninsulas stretching deep into the water and the many small islands scattered across its surface. The shoreline is quite heavily developed, with houses lining much of the waterfront and even some of the islands, so uninterrupted access to the water can be limited. Still, those willing to explore will find a few peaceful spots. For one of the best panoramic views of the lake and its surroundings, follow Átlós Street to one of the peninsulas, which rises into a small hill overlooking the area.

For the return journey, it's worth adding a small detour towards the György Kolonics Promenade. Along the way, you can visit Tamariska Hill, another surprisingly unique natural spot in the area. From there, follow the promenade all the way to Gubacsi Bridge. After crossing the bridge, the route continues along Soroksári Road, eventually leading back into the city centre at Boráros Square.

A day trip to Lupa Lake

The cycling route to Szentendre along the Danube is a longtime favourite among Budapest cyclists, but this time we're focusing on a shorter section of it. Instead of continuing all the way to Szentendre, the destination is Budakalász and the area around Lupa Lake. If you're starting from Buda, the route is wonderfully straightforward: simply follow the riverside cycle path along the Danube, without needing to leave it. Those coming from Pest can easily cross to the Buda side via the recently renovated pedestrian, cycling and railway bridge north of Népsziget, which connects the border of Angyalföld and Újpest with the opposite bank. From there, it's a smooth ride towards Budakalász.

After crossing the bridge, you'll arrive right at the entrance to the Római-part promenade. This stretch can be a little slower going due to the crowds and the occasionally uneven surface, so those looking for a quicker ride may prefer one of the parallel streets just inland, though that means giving up the riverside views for a while. Beyond Római-part, the route continues along the flood embankment and past rows of holiday cottages before reaching Budakalász. From here, a small ferry takes visitors across to Lupa Island. It's worth leaving your bike on the mainland, as the island is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot. Lupa Island has a unique atmosphere, evoking the feeling of a bygone summer retreat. Lush vegetation, charming stilted cottages and a sense of timelessness make it feel worlds away from the city. A short walk to the far side of the island also rewards visitors with a view of the tiny one-tree island that once appeared on the reverse side of Hungary's old 10-forint banknote.

You could easily spend an entire day soaking up the atmosphere of Lupa Island, though a leisurely walk around it is just as rewarding. After returning to the mainland, you can either cycle straight back to Budapest or extend the outing with a small detour. The attractive floodplain forest that stretches along the riverbank offers welcome shade on warmer days, making it a refreshing stop before heading home. For anyone already passing through the area by bike, it's well worth the extra time.

A day out at Naplás Lake

One of the best cycling destinations within Budapest is undoubtedly Naplás Lake. No matter where you're starting from, it never feels particularly close - unless you happen to live nearby - which only adds to the sense of escape. Arriving here feels as though you've left the city far behind and stepped into a completely different landscape. The area is home to lush floodplain forests teeming with birds and turtles, while the lake itself can be explored on foot along much of its shoreline. For an even better perspective, climb the nearby lookout tower, which offers sweeping views of the lake and the surrounding natural reserve.

Another reason to love Naplás Lake is that it's easily accessible via a network of well-maintained cycling paths. One of the most scenic approaches follows the Rákos Stream cycle route, which was recently named Hungary's Cycle Route of the Year. From there, cyclists can either turn onto the road leading directly to Naplás Lake as they approach the area, or join the cycle path running alongside the Szilas Stream, which connects directly to the lake. In other words, if you set off along the Rákos Stream cycle route, you'll eventually have more than one convenient option for reaching Naplás Lake, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination itself.

making Naplás Lake the natural destination, no matter which route you choose.
