ST STEPHEN’S DAY 2026
Of course, 20 August is first and foremost St Stephen's Day, Hungary's biggest national holiday, and Budapest will be celebrating across the city. Start the day with the traditional flag-raising ceremony at Kossuth Square, explore the Festival of Folk Arts in Buda Castle, sample Hungarian specialities at the Street of Hungarian Flavours or head to Margaret Island for family-friendly activities. The celebrations culminate in the evening with the fireworks, drone show and light projections over the Danube. There are plenty more programmes happening throughout the day, so it's worth planning ahead if you want to fit in more than one.

TRY ONE OF BUDAPEST’S NEWER BRUNCH SPOTS
A four-day weekend calls for at least one slow morning, and Saturday is a good opportunity to catch up on Budapest's ever-changing brunch scene. Electric Toast pairs brunch with vinyl culture, serving everything from savoury toast and scrambled eggs to French toast, pancakes, coffee and matcha while records spin in the background. You could also make your way to Cafe Arkitekter, where brunch, speciality coffee and a design-led interior come together in a stylish downtown setting. Or revisit Grumpy Budapest, which may already be a familiar name to Budapest brunch regulars, but is worth putting back on the radar after its renovation. Whichever you choose, there's no need to rush - that's what long weekends are for.

With its intimate, rustic atmosphere and leafy surroundings, there's something almost Italian-villa-like about the place, making it a lovely destination for breakfast, brunch or an early lunch.
