The capital of landlocked Hungary can still provide excellent fish – and funky places to find it. With spring in the air, terrace places have opened, in particular along Római-part, the Danube embankment up in Óbuda, served by the HÉV suburban train from Batthyány tér. Dishes featuring traditional sea- or freshwater fish, fried or in a pâté, are varied and manifold. From bistros and buffets with classic fish ‘n’ chips or catfish gyros, to eateries offering scallops and salmon, a whole range is here.

Halkakas halbisztró (Closed)

Opened at the end of 2017, Halkakas on Dohány utca offers amazing fish creations. They buy their ingredients fresh from local producers, so there’s no trace here of deep frozen solutions. Try the delicious carp pâté, catfish gyros, or carp crunchers and choose a tasty craft beer or some great wine to go with it. There are specials (1,500 HUF) every day, fish soup (1,750 HUF) at weekends, and chef’s suggestions recently included gazpacho, trout with forest-mushroom risotto and wrapped catfish with vegetable couscous.

HelloHal Fishbar

HelloHal on Ráday utca is the Pest outlet of the bistro Tiszaörvényi Halfalatozó, at a village by the river Tisza. Thanks to owner Szabolcs Horváth, here they really know their fish . You can drop by for lunch or during the evening, and also take part in interactive themed dinners, where they present different types of fish and the various ways to make delicious dishes from them. They offer a wide variety of food, so whether you’re craving classic fish 'n' chips, a great fish soup or bream, you won’t be disappointed.

Halműhely (Ceased)

Many eateries on Teréz körút offer fast food, but Halműhely definitely stands out. Sea-, freshwater and Hungarian fish varieties are on the menu, and they use rapeseed oil for frying. The fried trout and the bass are delicious, but the smoked trout tastes absolutely amazing: choose remoulade and fresh bread to go with it, it’s a real treat.

Budaörsi Halpiac – Dokk büfé

The fish selection offered at the fish market in Budaörs is slightly different from that of bistros or buffets along the Danube. They supply top Budapest restaurants with quality, fresh ingredients, and at Dokk Büfé they serve grilled dishes, too, such as wild salmon or scallops and sea bass. In addition, they regularly organise gourmet fish-tasting events.

Dunaparty Megálló

You find the food bus of Dunaparty Megálló opposite Savoya Park. It’s a popular destination for cyclists, a fun and leisurely eatery, welcoming guests from spring to autumn with pancakes, lángos fried dough and a true Hungarian favourite, hake. You might want to try fried hake in spicy breadcrumbs, with mayo and kovászos uborka, pickled cucumber.

Római-part: Party Sörkert, Jancsi Büfé, Kócsag

Római-part is like Balaton in Budapest. The retro plastic chairs, stone skipping and the smell of fried fish in the air, mingling with a hint of candy floss, evoke carefree childhood summers. You’ll find Hungarian hake and trout nearly everywhere around here, the most popular places being Party Sörkert and Jancsi Büfé. Our new favourite is Kócsag, with its modern design, craft beer and hake fried in gluten-free coating.
