This summer, we’ve discovered many delicious types of ice cream in Budapest, ranging from classic to new-wave flavors – but now, we recommend the strangest frozen confections we could find. This year, icy treats enriched with alcohol, condensed with liquid nitrogen, colored pitch black, and served as sandwiches take the limelight in Budapest.

DiVino and Anjuna: winesicle

The popsicles of Anjuna first burst into the local market in the summer of 2016, and shops are both in Buda and Pest since then. The vegan, gluten-free, and sugar-free delicacies lack artificial additives and come in various flavor combinations, such as avocado/tarragon/lime/chocolate. This summer, they collaborated with the DiVino wine bar to create four types of alcoholic, wine-infused fruit popsicles – or “winesicles”: Bikavér with black chocolate, Királyleányka with orange and strawberry, rosé with strawberry, and white with apricot.

Andretti Confectionery and Cutie Pie: black ice cream

Black ice cream has been ruling the Instagram feeds of our foreign friends for a while now, and like all trends, the dark treat made its appearance in Hungary with a slight delay. Andretti Confectionery was the first place to sell the evil-looking gelato, followed by Cutie Pie. The confection gets its odd, intense color from a special ingredient: activated charcoal powder said to have many health benefits. As for the taste, we can lick black ice cream in flavors such as coconut, chocolate, or Bounty – from an appropriately dark cone.

Cookies & Cream: ice-cream sandwich

Ice cream sandwiches might be commonplace in foreign nations, but here, all we ever had is wafers hugging some vanilla ice cream. Cookies & Cream, however, brought us gelato enclosed by crumbly cookies. The confectionery, located inside Japanika, offers various cookies and toppings to accompany their ice cream, usually resulting in a colorful sugar bomb – perfect for those who like aesthetically pleasing treats with a combination of textures.
