The wedding season may essentially conclude at the end of summer, but throughout autumn and winter many couples stay busy for months while planning out the “big day” during the upcoming warmer seasons. Even if they begin organizing their nuptial celebration a year in advance, one of the hardest tasks for engaged lovebirds is finding the perfect venue. Here we present a few suggestions for some of Budapest’s most exclusive and picturesque wedding venues, offering high-end romance for those who decide to tie the knot amid a fairy-tale atmosphere.

For this roundup, we specifically sought out old and historic venues that still hold a spectacular turn-of-the-century elegance; however, these edifices – which are often under historic-preservation protection – always have a rental fee, and their prices can be high (although they are often a bargain when compared with rental fees in nearby nations to the West). The base rental fees for most of the fairy-tale wedding venues presented below fall into a price range between 180,000-310,000 forints (approximately 600-1,000 euros).

Ádám Villa: turn-of-the-century grace in downtown Budapest

This neo-Baroque villa – built around 1920 for Magyar surgeon Lajos Ádám and his family – is a true pearl in Pest’s jewel-box neighborhood of Városligeti fasor; the nearby clinics were also founded by the world-famous surgeon. A primary advantage of this villa is that it is easily approachable by public transportation, either on a trolley bus, on the Millennium Underground, or by bus; there are also a few private parking lots, but a wedding is always more enjoyable if nobody has to drive. The civil ceremony can be held under the gigantic plane tree, or in the western wing, where marquetry decorations guarantee a high-class atmosphere.

In this fairy-tale villa, the tables can be organized in various combinations to suit the occasion, from a simple reception to a multi-course banquet. A full package includes everything from catering through photography to the music. A coffee break, sandwiches, and smorgasbord can all be requested, and in addition to the traditional meals, they also have fine-dining courses on offer, such as rump steak in a vegetable cream sauce, guinea-fowl consommé with roasted mushroom dumplings, or orange-flavored deer ragout with potato croquettes. Their offer includes vegetarian and diet-friendly options as well, and we can also ask for a classic or modern presentation. The price of this villa falls into the middle-range category: it is available at a base rate of 220,000 forints.Ádám Villa

Brody Villa: a dream home on Sváb Hill

This treasure hiding in the Buda Hills is a bit of an outsider, as it is not specifically a wedding venue, but rather a deluxe private rental home and event venue. However, it is a perfect choice for those who don’t wish to have a huge one-day party, but rather an intimate and atmospheric long-weekend wedding. This villa has six bedrooms and five bathrooms, and can accommodate 14 people. It can be rented for a minimum of three days, and up to 36 people can dine together at once in the elegant winter terrace that is enhanced with colorful stained-glass windows by Miksa Róth.

Built in 1881, the building and its parkland was the home of the renowned Dutch writer Jaap Scholten for years, and became a member of Budapest's Brody Group in the spring of 2016. In the garden, chestnut, pine, and yew trees provide ample shade, alongside roses and an elegant loggia, a terrace, a Zsolnay fountain, a swimming pool, and a hot tub, all at the disposal of guests throughout their stay. The management provides full service throughout visitors’ stay, so meals are made on the spot to suit each guest’s liking, while for bigger dinners they offer a seasonal buffet selection.Brody Villa

Malonyay Palace: a romantic refuge 30 minutes from the capital

This eclectic palace enhanced with Baroque touches and a 11,000-square-meter parkland is found nearby the Danube in Halásztelek, a small town just outside of Budapest. The villa lies a 30-minute journey away from the city center by car, but it takes much longer to get there by public transport. However, the sight of the French-roofed and richly decorated mansion – built in 1892 by the Warman family – makes the long trip well worthwhile. At the end of World War II, occupying Soviet troops ransacked the building, but it was finally renovated in 2005, and now it is a national monument shining in its old pomp. It is also possible to spend the night here after the wedding, as the palace has two suites that can each accommodate two people.

The building’s biggest treasure is the high-ceilinged hall covered with silk tapestry, and its stunning crystal chandeliers. The mansion works with two catering companies; one of them offers no less than 20 kinds of menu variations, and as for specialties, they offer dishes like Argentinean sirloin slices with piquant sour cream, mushroom and bacon ragout, mangalica chop roasted in its own fat, filled with goose liver paté and flavored with plum pálinka, and thyme-almond lamb with Médoc sauce from Eger.Malonyay kastély

Podmaniczky-Vigyázó Palace: royal pomp at Rákoskereszttúr

This Baroque jewel box of District XVII was built in 1760 by General Sándor Bojanovszky, the husband of Erzsébet Podmaniczky. After his death, the Podmaniczky family took possession of the mansion, until one member of the family became the wife of Duke Sándor Vigyázó in 1864. This family unison brought about the palace’s name, and a mausoleum found a few hundred meters away from the palace still today pays tribute to these two influential families. The thunderstorms of history slightly damaged the mansion, and in 1996 it burnt down, but it was fully restored in 2012.

This heritage mansion has its own confectionery, and it can accommodate 120-125 people in the hall, and 350 people in the conference hall. A party-planning company organizes receptions here, and the menu selection is just as classy as the edifice itself; appetizers include pullet slices filled with basil mascarpone with gravlax salmon slices, vegetable salad and quail eggs, or trotter wrap filled with cabbage with Mediterranean shredded salad. As a traditional Hungarian midnight meal, besides the customary beef stew, we can also order mini hot dogs and mini burgers.Podmaniczky-Vigyázó kastély

Sacelláry Palace: Cinderella’s castle in Budafok

Not many people know about this stunning edifice and its 20,000-square-meter parkland, found in southern Buda; this romantic and monumental mansion even has a small bastion and a tower. György Sacelláry ordered its construction at the end of the 19th century for his daughter, Irén, who became the wife of József Törley (the founder of one of the most famous Magyar sparkling-wine brands, based in Budafok) in 1885. When the weather permits, the civil ceremony and the reception can be held outside in the soothing shade of horse-chestnut trees, but Calvinist, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic churches are also all found just a short distance away for those who wish to hold a religious ceremony. In case of rain, the hall is also a heavenly indoor venue for tying the knot, as the palace’s interior is also truly imposing; the wooden panels and the stucco decorations, as well as the beautiful lead-glass windows of Miksa Róth, are extraordinary Secessionist elements.

The catering options include menus in various styles, stretching from classic Hungarian courses to an exclusive dinner, offering such meals as butterfish fillet marinated in wine with honey-citrus sauce and walnut-cream tagliatelle. The palace’s event-planning business offers various services that take care of everything from the decoration through the music to the makeup artist and the bouquet. In case you’d like to know more about their child-care options and other extra wedding services, they provide all important information in a personalized offer upon request.Sacelláry Kastély
