Normal lead: Budapest’s gastro map fills up with new flavours and colours every summer – and 2025 has brought plenty of fresh surprises too. From restaurants to cafés, pastry shops and breakfast spots, here are the latest openings that have made Budapest and its surroundings even richer this season.

New restaurants, bistros, street-food joints and cafés are waiting to be discovered – in Budapest, there’s always something exciting around the corner. Here are the latest favourites that made it truly worth stepping out this summer.

Flavours from around the globe in Budapest’s restaurants and bistros

If you were on the lookout for new restaurants this summer, Budapest did not disappoint. At Kosztolányi tér, Tranzit by Flow took over the baton from its closed Andrássy út venue, becoming the new home of Flow café – a plant-based paradise and green oasis where fermented wonders and vegan cheeses play the starring role. In the city centre, Hitchki stole the show with its Indian dishes, colourful interiors and spicy aromas, enchanting all our senses. One of the summer’s most distinctive newcomers was Monokini Kantin, where steaming bowls of ramen were served by day, and Spanish tapas filled the tables by night – a playful blend of Japanese and Mediterranean vibes. On the Buda side, Leon Osteria brought the cosy elegance of Italian trattorias, while Wave and Wine transported us to a light, seaside-style wine experience on the edge of the Római-part. Meanwhile, Constellation paired craft beers with a truly contemporary bistro feel.

Street food – crispy, quick and lovable

The street food scene was buzzing this summer too. Travis’ Tenders and Six Chicks tempted fried chicken lovers with their crispy coatings, while Ward brought authentic Levantine and Jordanian flavours to Ráday utca. At Bian Garden, a Vietnamese street food courtyard, everything from chicken feet to seafood turned up on the menu – unusual yet irresistible delicacies. Los Monos spiced up the edge of District III with Mexican dishes and a vibrant Latin American vibe, while Rotigami shook up Vas utca with its exotic Sri Lankan flatbreads.

Vegans weren’t left out either: Babszi, which moved from Pécs to Óbuda, proved that plant-based cuisine is anything but boring. Nitavalo won hearts with its kosher Middle Eastern specialities, offering not only sensational dishes but also a charming atmosphere. On the Hungarian side, Nokedlish in Buda and Pesti Lángos carried the flag, while Pizza Fetta and Lio Schiacciata sliced up a taste of Italy. And for those who missed out on their dream holiday, Poké Poké whisked diners away to Hawaii with its fresh and colourful bowls.

Brunches, coffee and cakes – Budapest’s sweetest summer openings

Mornings and afternoons got a lot more exciting with fresh new spots. The much-talked-about but undeniably cute Minipig Café, with its lovable piglet theme, has already become a crowd favourite. For tiramisu lovers, all roads lead to Little Rome in Szentendre, where both traditional and fruity reimagined versions tempt from the counter. Líra Terasz invites you to a quiet break with Madal’s own-roasted coffee and Grumpy Monkey’s pastries once your to-dos are done. Mattarello and Cookie Space have croissant and cookie fans covered, while Miyu Matcha built a magical universe around Japanese green tea. Mamie brought fine French pastries and irresistible ice cream to two city locations, alongside Hungarian classics, while the renovated Cziniel reopened in Budakeszi, reviving the charm of a classic confectionery and brunch spot. In the city centre, Pink Pistachio’s dreamy pink world became a paradise for pistachio fans, while Smoothie Sanctuary offered cooling fruit bombs to help us survive the heatwave. And finally, Fluffy&Me’s soft, airy pancakes made every day a little brighter – the value-for-money ratio may spark debate, but it’s worth a try well beyond the summer.

Be it a long, lingering dinner at Kosztolányi tér, crispy chicken bites in the party district, or sweet pistachio delights in the heart of downtown, this summer’s new gastro spots once again proved that dining in Budapest is more than just a necessity – it’s an experience, a community, and a generous dose of summertime spirit.
