Casa Mexa on Síp Street has already become a go-to spot for anyone craving authentic Latin American street food. Now, riding on its growing popularity, the team has opened a second home just a few minutes from Oktogon, where their much-loved tacos take centre stage once again.

In Mexican cuisine, quesadillas are just as popular as tacos, yet many still associate the country’s food first and foremost with burritos. At Casa Mexa’s original location, they offered chilaquiles instead – essentially a nacho bowl with a Mexican twist. On Teréz körút, however, burritos have made it onto the menu too. Still, it seems the real crowd favourite remains the taco, loved for the fact that you can sample several different fillings in a single meal.

Burritos now on the menu at Casa Mexa’s new spot

The Teréz körút venue is spacious and filled with light, though the high tables aren’t exactly made for lingering over dinner for hours. Casa Mexa is a Mexican fast-food joint, but one that doesn’t compromise: juicy meats and homemade tortillas deliver the usual high quality. The interior is kept minimalist, free from clichés or kitsch, while the aromas and the vibe together create a unique Latin atmosphere.

The concept follows a DIY approach: first you pick your base, then choose between chicken, pork or beef – or go meat-free if you prefer.

Cochinita is a slow-cooked pork dish prepared in banana leaves, originating from the Yucatán Peninsula. Pastor is a slightly sweet, pineapple-marinated pork, while tinga, made from chicken with smoky chipotle peppers, is one of the most typical taco fillings from Mexico City. Birria, a speciality from Jalisco, is tender beef cooked until it falls apart. For a meat-free option, there’s hongos – a mix of mushrooms, onion, potato and courgette – or rajas, made with roasted poblano chilli, tomato and onion. Extras like cheese, guacamole or birria broth can be added to any taco, while three different chilli sauces are set out on the counter for tasting. Just be careful: the one marked with three flames really does bring the fire!

All it takes is two tacos

Prices are refreshingly reasonable, and two tacos are more than enough to fill you up on a regular office day. The toppings aren’t just for show either – they really pack them in, so much so that it’s almost impossible to get a clean bite. A word of advice: if you’re in a shirt or a nice dress, proceed with caution, because the juices are bound to drip!

The richer pork taco pairs perfectly with the extremely fiery, smoky house sauce, while the fresh and slightly tangy green salsa is a great match for the vegan option. And even though the vegan filling is made entirely of vegetables, the addition of pickled red onion really elevates both the flavour and the texture.

Eating the chicken quesadilla is a challenge in itself – Casa Mexa was never the place you’d pick for a first date, but it’s spot-on if you’re craving authentic Latin American street food. The folded wheat tortillas are packed with chunks of chicken marinated for hours, giving the meat a juicy texture and bold, vibrant flavour. There’s no rice or beans here, but with the generous layer of melted cheese, it’s still a satisfyingly hearty bite.

A true Mexican speciality is horchata , a sweet coconut milk drink flavoured with cinnamon. It’s a wonderfully refreshing counterbalance to the spicy dishes – much like the selection of Mexican soft drinks waiting in the fridge.
