There are two Jamie Oliver–branded restaurants in Budapest: Jamie Oliver’s Italian in the Buda Castle District and Jamie Oliver’s Diner in the city centre. Both spots embody the same relaxed vibe, homely atmosphere, and quality ingredients that the celebrity chef himself is known for. This time, we visited the Gozsdu Courtyard to sample the American-inspired dishes with a signature Jamie twist — from starters to desserts.

Maximalism and American Flavours — with a Jamie Twist

At Jamie Oliver’s Diner, you’ll find all the classic American comfort food favourites — but with a signature Jamie twist. Whether it’s an unexpected ingredient, a bold flavour pairing, or a cheeky take on tradition, each dish challenges the stereotype that American cuisine can’t be fresh or wholesome. As always, Jamie brings his playful creativity to every bite:

I’ve always wanted to create a diner menu packed with delicious American classics – but far from the usual clichés,” says Jamie. “The menu brings together juicy, indulgent dishes and fresh, healthy salads, all made with only the best ingredients.

The menu features juicy burgers, BBQ ribs, Detroit-style pizzas, shakes, and waffles — with fresh salads rounding out the selection.

When it comes to quality, there’s no room for compromise. As we learned, anyone hoping to run a restaurant under Jamie Oliver’s name must meet exceptionally high standards — the name truly comes with responsibility. Only the best ingredients make it onto the plate, from the flour and fresh produce to the meat, which is sourced with careful attention to animal welfare. The beef used in their burgers, for example, comes from Szomor Ökofarm in Apajpuszta — it’s artisanally processed, rich in flavour, and top-tier in quality. The buns are baked by Szabi, a pék, using premium Hungarian flour, and your coffee? It’s poured from specialty beans roasted right here by Budapest Mocca .

What’s more, even the tiniest changes to the original recipes must be reported to Jamie’s team — no substitutions or tweaks are made without approval. The chefs from the global Jamie Oliver network don’t just connect online; they also meet in person to exchange ideas and experiences. And while it’s a large international franchise, there’s a surprising sense of community and personal connection that makes being part of the “Jamie family” something special. We honestly didn’t expect the requirements to be this strict — but what stood out even more was how genuinely supportive the entire network is. These behind-the-scenes insights only added to the credibility of the District VII diner… and we hadn’t even started tasting the food yet.

From Classics to Detroit-Style Pizza and Burgers

Jamie’s Diner takes you on an American flavour journey — and it all starts with popcorn. Whether you’re popping in for a cocktail or sitting down for a full meal, you’ll be greeted with a warm serving of freshly popped corn, made right before your eyes in the open dining area. It’s a small touch, but one that sets the tone for the playful, feel-good experience to come.

The atmosphere at Jamie’s Diner feels just like stepping into a classic American eatery. From the bold colours and cosy booths to the open kitchen, everything evokes that familiar diner vibe. And of course, Jamie Oliver himself feels like everyone’s favourite “familiar stranger” — the kind who’s been in our homes for years through his cooking shows. Friendly, attentive service and the open kitchen concept only add to the warm, welcoming feeling that makes this place feel a little bit like home.

Among the bar snacks and salads, you’ll find a spicy, cheesy nacho platter topped with avocado, sour cream, coriander, spring onions, and jalapeño salsa — and for an extra indulgence, you can add pulled BBQ pork. What won us over right from the start? The nachos themselves: rustic, house-made, baked fresh on-site and made from wheat flour instead of corn. A small twist, but seriously delicious.

In the Caesar salad, it’s the toasted hazelnuts that take the flavour to the next level — we loved how they paired with the garlicky yoghurt dressing that coats the crisp romaine lettuce and red onion. The mix of textures is topped off with crunchy house-made croutons and a sprinkle of parmesan. You can add chicken if you like, but honestly, it was perfect just as it was.

From the list of classics, the mac ’n’ cheese is a must-try. At first glance, the portion might not seem huge — but the rich, creamy cheese sauce, generous sprinkle of parmesan, and crispy pangrattato (toasted breadcrumbs) make it surprisingly hearty. It’s the kind of dish we could happily eat any day. The pasta itself is handmade at the Jamie Oliver’s Italian in the Castle District, where the team has the tools and space for fresh pasta prep.

The slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs fall right off the bone — just as they should — and get an irresistible boost from spring onions, coriander, and a touch of chili. If you're more into steak, go for the rib-eye slices served in a crispy baguette, layered with provolone cheese, roasted peppers, and a rich duo of caramelised onion and cheese sauce.

The freshly baked waffle arrives topped with crispy fried chicken, spiced up with jalapeños, Cajun seasoning, and coriander, then generously drizzled with maple syrup. The chicken is marinated in buttermilk and coated in a bold Kentucky spice mix before frying — juicy on the inside, crunchy on the outside. And if you’re a fan of spicy, Mexican-inspired flavours, don’t miss the chili con carne. Made with a secret blend of 18 spices, it completely won us over.

When it comes to pizza, Jamie’s Diner goes full-on Detroit. The dough is soft, airy, and slightly taller than your usual slice — thanks to a slow, 12-hour proofing process. Baked in small steel pans for 10–12 minutes, the base gets a golden, crispy crust while staying light and fluffy on the inside. Toppings are layered both before and after baking for the perfect balance of melty and fresh. The vegetarian option is a classic Margherita with mozzarella, veggie parmesan, and a sprinkle of oregano — simple, satisfying, and full of flavour.

It’s a simple yet seriously satisfying lunch — and if you’re in a rush, you can easily take it to go in one of their signature takeaway boxes. You’ll also find chicken fajita and spicy pepperoni versions on the menu for those who like a little heat.

The burger here deserves special mention — the handmade bun and premium beef patty already promise a lot, but one bite confirms it: this is the real deal. If you’re after something lighter, go for the Habanero Chicken Burger . For a bold, no-holding-back combo, try The Whole Hog , stacked with pulled pork, crispy bacon, cheddar, caramelised onions, and tomato — it’s a flavour bomb in a bun.

Special menu for kids

Although it’s located in the bustling Gozsdu Courtyard, the diner is surprisingly family-friendly — by day, the area shows a much calmer side. During our visit, the courtyard was full of families, passers-by on guided tours, and marketgoers browsing for antiques. There’s plenty of life here even in daylight hours. Inside the restaurant, little diners are well catered for with a variety of kid-approved dishes — from mini burgers to sesame-crusted chicken served on a lollipop stick. What’s more, children under 12 can enjoy a free kids’ menu with every adult main course. And while they wait? Colouring sheets and crayons keep them entertained at the table.

Create-Your-Own Desserts, Jamie Style

Whether you're team pancake, waffle, or doughnut — here, you can top your dessert just the way you like it. Choose from toppings like banana-caramel, nutty brownie chunks, or a tangy forest fruit mix. We tried the waffle and doughnut combo, paired with a fruity milkshake, but during the summer months, it’s well worth adding a scoop of ice cream too.

Jamie’s Diner is a great choice whether you work nearby and need a quick bite — to stay or to go — or you’re looking for a relaxed spot to visit with friends or family. It’s not just an evening hangout either; during the day, Gozsdu Courtyard shows a much calmer, friendlier side. And if you’d rather stay in, you can order any of their dishes through Wolt and enjoy your favourites at home.
