Budapest summer means tram 4 and 6 renovations — and 2025 is no exception. Track works are already underway on the Szent István körút section between Jászai Mari tér and Tátra utca, having started on June 22. Here’s what you need to know about the ongoing project and how it affects public transport in the area.

Why is the renovation needed?

Around 280,000 people use trams 4 and 6 daily, making them among the world's busiest lines. This high traffic necessitates frequent track renovations. Since a full closure is impossible, reconstruction occurs in planned sections. While this has led to the 'eternal renovation' becoming a meme, it's more manageable than a complete shutdown. The current section was last repaired 15 years ago, between 2009-2010.

How long will the work last?

Renovation work officially started on Sunday, 22 June at 4 am and the section is expected to remain closed until 31 July. A temporary terminus has been set up at Vígszínház, with service restrictions already in effect since Saturday, 22 June.

How trams 4 and 6 will run

From Sunday, 22 June until approximately 31 July, trams 4 and 6 will run between the south Buda termini (Újbuda-központ and Móricz Zsigmond körtér respectively) and the temporary terminus at Jászai Mari tér (Vígszínház).

The 4-6 replacement bus will run between Széll Kálmán tér and Nyugati pályaudvar, but it's best to change from trams to replacement buses and vice versa at the Jászai Mari tér (Vígszínház) temporary terminus. Another important change is that replacement buses won't stop at Margitsziget in either direction.

Other services affected by the renovation

The renovation affects several other public transport services and routes, so prepare for these changes:

  • At Nyugati pályaudvar, the 91, 191, and 291 bus termini will be relocated to the 931 night service stop—you can board these services there during this period.
  • At Jászai Mari tér, stops for buses 9, 26, 91, 191, 226, 291, 923, 931, and 934 will be relocated to Vígszínház, to the 4-6 replacement bus stops.
  • At Margaret Bridge's Buda bridgehead, the 931 bus towards Pest will stop at a designated road stop instead of the tram platform.

Alternative routes and other changes

For those wanting to avoid replacement buses, the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK) suggests using the M2 metro to reach Pest city centre. Expect increased passenger numbers on the H5 HÉV as well as trams 17, 19, and 41.

Renovation restrictions also affect road traffic. In practice, this means that on Szent István körút between Pannónia utca and Margaret Bridge's Pest bridgehead, only one lane in each direction will be available for cars, bicycles, and public transport vehicles.

However, BKK recommends that cyclists use Chain Bridge or the Árpád Bridge–MargitszigetMargaret Bridge route instead. Drivers are asked to seek alternative routes to Margaret Bridge where possible.
