Big changes are coming for cyclists in Budapest – Nagykörút, the city's busiest boulevard, could soon be a cyclist’s dream! Plans for a bike highway promise wider, protected lanes, making the area greener, safer, and a whole lot more rideable.

Cycling infrastructure along the Grand Boulevard (Nagykörút) is set for a major upgrade, with plans for a bike highway in the works. The project aims to improve bike lanes and revamp public spaces, making the stretch between Nyugati Station and Boráros tér safer, greener, and more pedestrian-friendly. Better walkways and leisure areas won't just make the neighbourhood more inviting for residents and visitors – they could also be a boost for local businesses.

According to the Centre for Budapest Transport, the Grand Boulevard's upcoming development will focus on five key areas, aiming to make it safer, more organised, and cyclist-friendly:

  • Protected Bike Lanes – Two-meter-wide, physically separated lanes will run in both directions between Nyugati tér and Boráros tér. Positioned between the sidewalk and parking spaces, they'll include a buffer zone to prevent accidents from opening car doors.
  • Better Bike Connectivity – Improved cycling infrastructure at intersections will ensure smoother and safer connections.
  • Organised Parking & Loading – New bike racks, Bubi (bike-sharing service) stations, and designated loading zones for deliveries and people with limited mobility will help keep the bike lanes clear and traffic flowing.
  • Raised Crossings at Side Streets – These elevated crossings will force cars to slow down at turns, making things safer for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Revitalised Public Spaces – Expect refreshed urban areas, greener spaces between tree lines, and new street furniture to make the boulevard more inviting.

With these updates, the Grand Boulevard could become a more bikeable, walkable, and livable part of the city. Meanwhile, key elements of the city's transport system will remain unchanged – tram lines 4-6, platforms, and night bus stops will stay as they are to ensure smooth public transit. While major intersections for cars will be reviewed, overall traffic flow will be maintained.

The finalised construction plans are expected by 2027, with the bike highway built in phases between 2028 and 2029. Already a staple in several European cities, this kind of high-capacity cycling route could provide a fast, wide, and uninterrupted path for cyclists – potentially forming the backbone of Budapest's bike network. It could also offer a safe, seamless connection between the suburbs and the city centre.
