Fifteen years ago, in 2009, the first Christmas tram appeared in Budapest, and since then it's been as much of a holiday staple as the Christmas markets. This year, six different types of advent trams are cruising around the city, spreading festive cheer. Among them is a Tatra tram, which covers the 1, 14, 17, 41, 56, and 59 lines, a Ganz industrial articulated (ICS) tram on the 47 and 49 lines, and a modernised articulated tram (KCSV) on the 2 and 23 lines. The 'camel' tram, known by its type code TW6000, is running on the 3, 42, 50, and 51A lines, while the light-covered Siemens Combino tram is making appearances on the 4 and 6 lines.
This year, festive lights have been added to the Cogwheel Railway that runs between Városmajor and Széchenyi Hill. The iconic UV tram, known for its original route along the Pest embankment, is also making appearances all over the city. Its route will often be special too, with the tram travelling on the connected 42-50 and 14-41 lines.
Some of the vehicles got decked out on the inside as well – so make sure to look around when hopping on board.
The Christmas Fleet will be on the road until 6th January, and you can check out the timetable here.
A new addition this year, the Christmas Boat began its service on December 2nd. This unique sightseeing route offers stunning views of Budapest, its historic landmarks, and architectural masterpieces. The boat operates in the late afternoon and evening, and you can find the full schedule here.
Also, the Santa Bus started its routes on December 6th, running until December 23rd, covering bus lines 105, 210, 130, 11, 99, and 198.
