Easily accessible by car via Route 11 from Budapest, Gól Restaurant is a convenient stop-off point during a trip to the Danube Bend – ample free parking is available on-site. The restaurant is also a welcome pit stop on the Szentendre bike path for cyclists, and the HÉV train station is just a short walk away.
Local pub turned restaurant
Originally a beach bar, Gól underwent a transformation seven years ago, evolving into a family-run restaurant with air-conditioned indoor and outdoor dining areas. At the heart of the business is Ferenc, the talented chef, while his wife, Apollónia, ensures guests feel warmly welcomed.
From bread to ice cream: A labour of love
Ferenc, the culinary heart of Gól, is passionate about sourcing the finest ingredients. His homemade sourdough bread, baked in-house, is a testament to this commitment. With a keen eye for quality, he's constantly experimenting with new flavours and techniques. A recent addition to his repertoire is homemade ice cream, with four carefully crafted flavours that rotate seasonally. Complementing these sweet treats are their signature syrups – blackcurrant, raspberry, and the seasonal lavender – all made in-house.
„Our love for travel and food inspires our creations," Ferenc explains. "We bring back recipes and flavours from our adventures to share with our guests."
Hungarian curiosities served
Gól Restaurant's menu is a delightful exploration of flavours. The summery raspberry cream soup, a velvety concoction with cottage cheese dumplings, is a refreshing starter.
For a heartier option, the rich bean soup, traditionally enjoyed with homemade sourdough, is a must-try.
The appetizer selection is equally tempting, with roasted onion marrow, fried or grilled camembert, and Caesar salads featuring chicken or prawns.
While not strictly Italian, Gól's pasta dishes are exceptional. Their tagliatelle, imported from Italy, is served with a choice of Bolognese, creamy spinach and garlic, or black forest ham and mushroom sauces. The gorgonzola sauce is a particular favourite.
Given the restaurant's lakeside location, the fish dishes are a highlight. From classic fried hake and pike-perch to more adventurous options such as fried trout, salmon steaks, and the chef's special gilt-head bream, seafood lovers are well-catered for.
The Latter is a summer favourite, served with grilled vegetables, lemon, and a caper, cucumber, and parsley remoulade.
Meat enthusiasts will be super pleased with the giant Wiener schnitzel, pork Wiener schnitzel, or the Japanese-inspired tonkatsu with jasmine rice and cumin coleslaw. For poultry lovers, the menu offers roasted duck breast, crispy duck legs, and the Hungarian classic, pork slices 'Brassói' style. Other local favourites include cordon bleu and 'Pékné' style ham hock.
For something truly special, try the chef's signature Shaun Hill panko-breaded chicken or the slow-cooked beef cheek with red wine and mushroom sauce. And for those craving a juicy steak or homemade burger, Gól has you covered.
Desserts
For dessert, the cottage cheese dumplings with sweet custard and cranberry sauce are an absolute must-try. This classic Hungarian dish is a delightful end to any meal.
Pancake desserts and the ethereal Floating Island, a meringue nestled in vanilla custard, are other tempting options.
And don't forget to indulge in their homemade, additive-free ice cream. We particularly recommend the four-scoop ice cream cone topped with sugar-free whipped cream, available during the warmer months.
To complement your meal, Gól offers a selection of draught beers, spirits, wines, and the Hungarian spirit pálinka. Their homemade lemonades and syrups are refreshing alternatives, and we highly recommend trying their homemade iced tea.
Gól Restaurant is a true hidden gem. Just a short distance from Budapest, it offers exceptional food, service, and atmosphere. The warm hospitality, reminiscent of a traditional inn, combined with innovative dishes and a commitment to quality ingredients, makes it a standout destination. Whether you crave classic Hungarian cuisine, some modern twists, or simply a relaxing lakeside escape, Gól has something to offer everyone.
