For years, we have been waiting for Népliget, the city’s largest green space, to be regenerated and transformed from a peripheral area into a popular leisure and recreation site. In August 2022, the Municipality of Budapest launched a competition for ideas for the park’s redevelopment, with the aim of ecologically renewing the green spaces, reducing the number of paved surfaces, and improving the permeability and safety of the Népliget, while preserving its historic garden character.

The competition received 16 entries, six of which were awarded prizes by the jury, although there was no first-prize winner. It is because “there were elements in each concept that offered a better solution to one particular problem than the others,” explained the Deputy Mayor of Budapest Gábor Kerpel-Fronius. He added that according to the plans, the winning entries are “composing” the concept plan of the Népliget.

The first step will be to reduce the park’s traffic; cars and parking spaces, dismantle unused pavilions and help native species to thrive in the planting.

Of all the entries received, the 4D Téjépítész Iroda landscape architectural firm’s entry was judged the best, as it most effectively reveals the values of the Népliget. It also uses ecological and natural tools to regenerate and even treat the park as a living asset. The renewal of the park and its spatial structure is a decade-long task, which is still in its early stages, but we are looking forward to walking around the redesigned Népliget and rediscovering its values.
