The gradual handover of the lower Pest embankment to
pedestrians and cyclists is now coming to fruition. It became a tradition, established
during the pandemic, to make the lower quay car-free for summer and holiday
weekends.
By 2023, this arrangement will be permanent. As the downtown section south of Chain
Bridge is one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the world, making it car-free
only adds to its value.
Currently, the City, environmental experts, motorists’ associations and the individual districts involved are in discussion. Clarification is needed on exactly how long the section should be. Details also have to be worked out as to how to grant access to certain motorised services, such as rubbish collectors, police and emergency workers, as well as Főkert staff who look after the trees and greenery.
