The idea of renovating Bakáts tér has long been in the offing but it was only in 2021 that a greener approach was agreed between the municipality and local residents.
New trees, flowerbeds and green spaces all feature, while the renovation of St Francis of Assisi Church, designed by Miklós Ybl of Opera House fame, is still in full swing. Traffic has been blocked from the section connecting Ráday utca and Knézich utca with Tompa utca, meaning less noise and fumes.
In the warmer months, a temporary stage will be set up on the pedestrianised space in front of the church for live events. The pavement, by the way, sports an attractive decorative covering, a herringbone pattern familiar to northern European cities.
As well as greenery and a fountain with a drinking
spot for dogs, a collection spot for communal MOL Bubi bikes and a micro-mobility
point allow anyone to leave their scooter or cycle in a designated area.
Communal tables are set up for chess and the fiendish Hungarian board game of malom.
