In a recent move, Budapest’s Metropolitan Assembly unanimously voted to grant special status to the floodplain gallery forest surrounding Óbuda Island, where several protected species of animals and plants live. This also allows events such as the Sziget Festival to take place without the threat of development around it.
Further west towards Solymár, revered for its secret waterfalls and fairy-tale bridges, the Jegenye Valley is now also considered protected. The area is known as the Salamander Valley because of the spotted salamanders who make it their home.
