Between 27 August and 5 September, synagogues and entertaining cultural and gastronomic events around Budapest take centre stage as part of Synagogues Week, when the Terézváros Synagogue will be opening its doors after its decades-long closure. The Cholent Festival awaits with family-friendly activities and gastronomic adventures, there will be an exciting theatrical premiere and a concert by soul singer/songwriter Alex Clare, while Afro-American Hasidic rapper Nissim Black is coming to Hungary for the first time.

This year, The Association of Hungarian Jewish Communities ((EMIH) is celebrating the autumn Jewish holidays with a large-scale series of events, Synagogue Weeks. With Jewish New Year falling on 6 September, the two weekends either side of Rosh Hashanah offer attractive events for all, not only the Jewish community.

As concerns this series of events, on Friday, 27 August the ceremonial reopening of the tiny Terézváros Synagogue, closed for decades, will provide an uplifting spiritual experience for members of the traditional Jewish community.

On August 29, the wider public can look forward to a special gastronomic experience, as this is when the all-day Cholent Festival takes place. In the surroundings of the Buda Park Stage, Visitors will be able to sample special cholent stew from four countries

Children’s activities and exciting cultural events will also be laid on, and the evening closes with two star performers. American Hasidic Jewish rapper Nissim Black will be giving a first-ever concert in Hungary, while an appearance by London-born soul singer and songwriter Alex Clare, a familiar face from the Sziget Festival, promises to be a real musical treat.

Synagogues Week also includes other interesting events, such as the reopening of the Bocskai út Synagogue on 29 August. The other cornerstone of the series is being organised around the oldest synagogue in Budapest. Celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, Óbuda Synagogue will stage a special theatrical premiere. Dramatist Csaba Hollós won the synagogue's anniversary competition for his play Munz Mose’s Ladder, to be directed by Orsolya Fodor.

Synagogues Week concludes on 5 September with a family day related to the opening of the redesigned and significantly expanded ZSILIP in Újlipótváros.
