Aldous Harding's talent has caught the attention of artists including Courtney Barnett, while her distinctive musical world has drawn comparisons to David Byrne and Laurie Anderson. Raised by musician parents, Harding initially had little interest in following the same path, but her creative ambitions eventually found their way into music, resulting in a deeply sensitive and captivating singer-songwriter. On 25 June, audiences in Budapest will have the chance to immerse themselves in her unique songs when she makes her local debut at Dürer Kert.

New Zealand singer-songwriter Hannah Harding, better known as Aldous Harding, first gained wider attention with her self-titled debut album in 2015. Praised for its gothic indie-folk sound and raw emotional depth, the record drew comparisons to PJ Harvey and Kate Bush. Her later albums - Party (2017), Designer (2019) and Warm Chris (2022) - moved towards a more offbeat and experimental indie-pop sound, evoking artists such as David Byrne and Laurie Anderson.

Harding grew up in Lyttelton, a port town near Christchurch, New Zealand, in a family of musicians. She made her first appearance on a recording at the age of 13, featuring on her mother Lorina Harding's album, Clean Break.

Despite her musical upbringing, Harding initially had no plans to pursue a career in music, viewing it as an uncertain path. She later abandoned her ambitions of becoming a veterinarian and began writing and performing songs with a musician friend. In 2008, she joined the travelling string ensemble Eastern as a backing vocalist, while one of her first major breaks came when Courtney Barnett spotted her busking and invited her to open for a concert later that same evening.

In 2012, Harding adopted the name Aldous and enlisted John Parish and Ben Edwards to co-produce her debut album. The self-titled record received widespread critical acclaim and was followed by an extensive tour. For her second album, she signed with the independent British label 4AD and once again collaborated with Parish, known for his work with PJ Harvey and Tracy Chapman. Released in 2017, Party earned a nomination for Album of the Year in New Zealand. After a 100-date tour, Harding returned to the studio with Parish to record her third album, Designer, released in 2019. It was followed by Warm Chris in 2022, featuring collaborators including Seb Rochford, Gavin Fitzjohn, Colin Killalea, Hopey Parish and Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods. While Harding's distinctive blend of storytelling, sensitivity and understated confidence has earned her a devoted following, Budapest audiences have yet to see her perform live - until now.

But now is the opportunity, as Aldous Harding will play for the first time in Budapest, at the Dürer Kert, on June 25th .
