One of the key venues on gallery-lined Falk Miksa utca, the Judit Virág will be reopened to the public this weekend, on 15 May, with big names in Hungarian art featured in its first auction this year. The works, including pieces by Mihály Munkácsy and József Rippl-Rónai, will be on view to the public until the end of the month in the gallery’s striking new exhibition space.

Once a modest room the size of an average flat, the Judit Virág has expanded over the years and is now eight times bigger. The reopening exhibition to show there comprises 262 works, all part of the gallery’s fine-art and contemporary auctions, to take place on 1 and 2 June respectively.

This video gives a flavour of what’s on offer.

You can bid for works online, over the phone or in person at the Budapest Congress Center, if pandemic measures allow. Expect serious money to be paid for Sándor Bortnyik’s Machine Knight, Mihály Munkácsy’s Parisian Woman and Ilona Keserü’s Marylin and the Sea.

Also worth looking out for is the József Rippl-Rónai oil painting Uncle Piacsek with the Niklay Girls, which provides an insight into the garden of the famous painter’s house on Fő utca.

Details of all works in the fine-art sale can be found here, as well as selected items from the contemporary auction.
