Foaming beer glasses, checked tablecloths, champagne, spritzers and pálinka, under tree shade or in smoky rooms – Budapest’s diverse drinkeries have always been popular, and missed more than ever these days. While we wait for them to open up, let’s drink in a little nostalgia!

The garden terrace of the Disznófő restaurant, 1876. This restaurant lasted for almost a hundred years. Today, unfortunately, only a dilapidated wooden booth indicates the location of this once revered locale.

Between Citadella and Jubileum Park stood the Géllerthegyi nagyvendéglő, where hikers could relax after trekking to the top of Gellért Hill. In 1927, this merry group was taking a break from their exertions up the many steps.
