During the current renovation of Buda Castle, experts have found a number of valuable Roman, medieval and fin-de-siècle discoveries around the southern bastion. The latest is a lion statue that once decorated the recreational house of revered Habsburg Empress Elisabeth, Sissi to Hungarians.

The preparation for the long-overdue reconstruction of Buda Castle began with surveys and comprehensive archaeological research. A number of fascinating historical artefacts have emerged, most recently a relief of a lioness that once adorned the façade of a so-called Hungarian House

This place of recreation was built by famed architect Alajos Hauszmann in the 1890s at the request of Elisabeth herself. After World War II, it was demolished and replaced by the medieval Zsigmond Tower, which can be seen today.

In addition, a Roman coin, a silver dinar minted during the reign of King Ferdinand I, cannonballs of solid iron, a 17th-century ring with a polished stone, a 19th-century token featuring the image of an angel and a railway seal made in Košice in 1918 have also been unearthed.

Along with the current reconstruction of the castle wall, there will be continuous excavations in the coming years, providing experts with new data about Buda Castle and its history.
