Főfotó has a vast collection of photographs taken between 1961 and 1993, depicting the everyday life of Hungary’s city residents and serene villagers. This extensive archive brings together both staged and spontaneous photos of festivities, fairs, fashion shows and public events; but portraits and publicity shots are also included in this fascinating ensemble.
The Budapest City Archives recently gained access to some 150,000 images, around half of which have been sorted and made available to the public.
The public has also been asked to help identify certain photos and provide a little background where possible.
The remaining pictures will be released once the experts at the Budapest City Archives have processed them. Until then, you can browse the first half of the archive online. The text is Hungarian-only but click on 'Budapest Negyed' and you see a long list of addresses and subjects. All photos may be downloaded and used for free for non-commercial purposes.
