This September, Budapest’s recently opened Puskás Aréna will stage the UEFA Super Cup between the winners of the 2020 Champions League and Europa League. Scheduled to co-host Euro 2020, the Hungarian capital suffered the disappointment of having the tournament postponed until 2021. Now local fans can look forward to Europe’s two greatest club sides coming together here on 24 September.

The traditional curtain-raiser to the European international season, the annual Super Cup is a prestigious fixture that was hosted in Monaco until 2012. Recent venues have included Istanbul, Cardiff and Prague. For Budapest, this will be the first major football showcase the city has staged in its history.

The teams still involved in Europe’s two major club competitions, whose winners will come to Budapest in September, include Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus.
