Budapest’s recently opened Puskás Aréna has just been selected to stage one of football’s most prestigious showcases, the Europa League final, it has just been announced. The event will take place in 2022, two years after Hungary’s 67,000-capacity stadium hosts four matches for Euro 2020.

Just behind the Champions League, the Europa League is the biggest tournament in club football. Cities to have staged recent finals, a one-off, winner-takes-all shebang in late May, include Turin, Dublin and Amsterdam, where the decision has just been announced to select Budapest as 2022 host.

Named after the famous Hungarian player who graced the original stadium here in the 1950s, the Puskás Aréna has only just been rebuilt. It was unveiled in November 2019 with a curtain-raising fixture between Hungary and Uruguay. This June, World Cup winners France, Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal and other top soccer stars will be playing here as part of Euro 2020, the first major football finals ever staged in Hungary.
