After a pilot project in May when the inner areas of Budapest’s bustling Districts VI and VII were closed to traffic, restrictions are now in place until the autumn. Closing times in the party quarter have also been under discussion.

With bars and cafés opening up around Budapest, former MEP Péter Niedermüller, current mayor of District VII, has been addressing issues concerning traffic and the party quarter. During the shutdown in May, areas of Districts VI and VII were closed to car traffic and cycling was encouraged.

This trend will be continued into the autumn, from Károly körút to Akácfa utca, and from Dohány utca to Király utca. The mayor hopes for not only a decrease in parked cars, and an increase in pedestrians and cyclists, but also a greener district as a whole.

Niedermüller has also sat down with Ábel Zsendovits, founder/owner of the Szimpla Kert, Budapest’s most prominent ruin bar. Under discussion was the ruling that shops need special permission from the council to operate after 10pm, bars and clubs after midnight. This long-running saga, though apparently resolved before the shutdown, looks set to continue…
