Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has announced a number of measures to instigate the gradual and careful reopening of Hungary’s capital – starting this weekend. The lower Danube embankment in Pest will be closed to car traffic for two days, and open to pedestrians and cyclists, making good on Karácsony’s election promise back in January. Margaret Island, Hajógyári Island and public playgrounds in Újpest will also be open, as outlined in an address that underlined the importance of mass testing.

In an announcement on his Facebook page, city mayor Gergely Karácsony outlined his Budapest Restart programme. More is expected to be announced today, while a government statement on Budapest is due to be released tomorrow, Saturday, 16 May.

In the meantime, Karácsony’s package of proposals includes the opening up this weekend of the Danube embankment to pedestrians and cyclists, an initiative he proposed back in January. Margaret Island and Hajógyári Island will also be open, along with a number of public playgrounds in Újpest.
